QUOTE (Biker1 @ May 19 2019, 09:08 AM) I would imagine that few, if any, on here are interested, but just in case there are.
A piece of rail history on Friday night as the very last HST to call at Newbury departed at 21:48 for Plymouth.
42 years of what I would classify as excellent service from a BRITISH built train!! The buffet coach will be a miss on hot sunny days...🙁

42 years of what I would classify as excellent service from a BRITISH built train!! Is that last Friday or this Friday? My feelings are that the HST is a superior passenger experience.

QUOTE (Turin Machine @ May 19 2019, 10:27 PM) Such a shame, another piece of historic British engineering goes to the great scrappy in the sky. No plans to scrap them yet, but currently many are in storage awaiting their fate. Some have gone to Scotrail and some are being retained by GWR for work in the West Country on local services.

QUOTE (je suis Charlie @ Nov 29 2019, 01:41 PM) Quick one to all you who have to use the trains, enjoy the next month, the longest industrial action in a generation. And labour want to give more power to the unions. It doesn't really affect Great Western Railway directly although there might well be additional passengers between Reading and Paddington on South Western Railway strike days. This current action is meant to be about the safety critical role of the train guards in despatching trains but in my opinion it is actually a final stand by the RMT union since if a guard is no longer required on every train then it renders future strike action completely ineffective.

It may have been a safety issue, I agree. In the days of slam door trains but know? With sliding doors, pressure sensors, closed circuit surveillance, computerisation the safety issue is redundant. Apparently no guards will lose their jobs. But hey! It's an excuse for the RMT to flex it's muscles and create chaos.

QUOTE (je suis Charlie @ Dec 1 2019, 07:33 PM) The train involved had a guard onboard, so, fifty shades of meh. Precisely my point....... The train reached a maximum speed of around 9 mph (14 km/h) and had travelled around 27 metres before being brought to a stand by the train’s conductor initiating an emergency brake application.

QUOTE (TallDarkAndHandsome @ Dec 2 2019, 07:40 AM) https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-50621621Bit surprised its only 33%. Come.on Jezza. Make it free! 🤣 Trains are crowded now. How will they be able to cope with such a massive increase in passenger numbers that this would bring about without first putting in place the necessary increase in infrastructure?
