No its simply because they are cheap and simply using BBC monoploy powers to keep other Broadcasters out.

Their income is governed (for better or worse) by statute. Under their charter, they can essentially do just what they want to anywhere in UK whenever they want. Over the years weasil words have been added - so no one else gets a real look in. Read it and the supporting rules sets and annotations...make a nice break in the Reading Room for a month or two!

Some of their income is, yes and as a result we have probably the most respected broadcasting organisation in the world as out national broadcaster which is one of the reasons why Murdoch and pals wants us to do away with the licence fee.

I don't see what this has to do with repeating everything in their jingles though.

Try Classic Fm , no jingles just good music with the "odd" , and I'm not joking either , advertisement .

Oh come on, no jingles, agreed - but some of the ads are dire, esp the ones trying to sell you cars. 'Be admired, buy a Mercedes..' or the other really irritating one with the geezer who claims to be a tyre fitter working under a lorry when the jack gave way and now is getting barrow loads of compensation. What on earth was he doing working under a vehicle only supported by a jack in the first place? - perhaps there's something to be said for jingles. Yeah, the music is good though

Try Radio 3, more variety than Classic FM without the adverts and better quality on DAB.

To be perfectly honest I find the adverts hilarious .
They had one not so long ago about a clinic that specialized in hernia operations and the punch line was -

" And you get up and walk away "

Money back if you don't I assume .

Better music too - until the evenings when they overdo the jazz (not that many jazz fans will agree with me ). Not so sure about better quality on DAB though - UK DAB is overcompressed (which is why DAB+ is on the way), a good FM aerial and receiver will outdo any DAB set. Or are you saying that Classic FM's DAB is even more compressed than R3's?

For me Radio 3 is the shining example of what the licence fee is for - high quality broadcasting of minority interest material. The BBC spends far too much cash competing for audiences with commercial stations.

I just checked and at most times Radio 3 is transmitted at 192kbs compared to Classic's 160kbs.

Radio 3 has Dynamic Range Control rather than compression so should be a better quality than FM in this respect.
