Students across West Berkshire are calling for Richard Benyon to resign after making a bad taste joke on the social media site twitter. Mr Benyon said "Just cycled on Boris bike thru oncoming student demo to vote. Collided with student. If only he knew the irony of the moment". Newbury Labour Party Community Organiser Richard Garvie said although it was in bad taste, the MP had simply made an ill-judged comment and that he will regret. "I'm sure in hindsight that Richard is mortified. The fact that he not only hit a student with his bike, but has also removed his funding isn't exactly something to be proud about and simply shows that these cuts are based on Tory ideaology". This country has a lot of problems, problems that Labour got us into.... again (like 1979) the Tories have to get us out of.

QUOTE (On the edge @ Nov 11 2010, 09:09 PM) The proposed new loan scheme is actually more helpful - BUT paying more means students can rightfully expect more from the University! Not really, we're talking top up fees so they are still massivley subsidised so they will still be getting a huge bargain.

You can read the twitter feed at: http://twitter.com/#!/RichardBenyonMPAre you basing your political career on the 'politics' of Alistair Campbell and Peter Mandelson?? I'm sure Richard Benyon is quaking in his boots at the thought of you mounting a campaign to get Newbury 'red'.

Mr Benyon said "Just cycled on Boris bike thru oncoming student demo to vote. Collided with student. If only he knew the irony of the moment". What the Hades is wrong with that? (I originally wrote something similar beginning with 'h', but the wimpish, politically-correct software changed it to a row of asterisks. Was this software written by the same West Berkshire students, by any chance?)

No, it was written by Americans, who are notoriously coy when it comes to some words that are perfectly normal in everyday British English (h*ll, d*mn etc.). In fact the words are in a table, that it would not be beyond the capabilities of the moderators to edit, if they were minded to. And don't mention the Lincolnshire town of S****horpe (yes - it really did that!).

Is it not enough just to post this guff over at newbury.net without you posting the same desperate political smearing here too? I dont think I've counted a single positive reply to your OP. Food for thought, wouldn't you say?

QUOTE (Richard Garvie @ Nov 12 2010, 12:30 AM) Not at all. Look at the real issue here, all course have had Government funding scrapped except science. Are you really saying that the government should not invest in courses such as History or English? Exactly; 'real issues' not some comment made by one political party or another.

QUOTE (Strafin @ Nov 12 2010, 06:09 PM) Also has anyone heard a student calling for a resignation because I haven't, and RG's quote in the NWN say's that they probably will, not that they have. misquote. Students are going to call for all MP's that back the new policy to resign, including here in West Berks.

Quick, prime the Labour candidate as I can see a by-election coming.... Maybe they'll get more than 4.3% this time. Might even get their £500 back.

Mr Benyon said "Just cycled on Boris bike thru oncoming student demo to vote. Collided with student. If only he knew the irony of the moment". So where's the joke? Benyon takes a Boris bike - okay, so do lots of others, that's what the bikes are there for. He collides with a student - unfortunate, hopefully no one was hurt. MP then ponders what the student would have thought if he known he had collided with a Tory minister. Not much of a joke - just a report of what happened. How is this in bad taste?
