Ever noticed that more often than not all the self-service check-outs in Tesco Metro Newbury aren't working?

Is there a reason for this other than the check-out staff trying to make them seem less popular than they would be if they were all open all the time?

I've asked that question to the manager and they keep saying the same thing; 'a shortage of staff'.

Self-service tills are a bit of a misnomer IMO. What they mean is that the customer does all the work, but a member of staff has to oversee in case of problems and to authorise sale of age-restricted goods.

Also, AIUI, shop-lifting is easier via self-service tills.

One member of staff per twelve tills, compared to one for every non-self service till.

I know someone who works there, & will ask when i see them. Might get a more truthfull answer, because from what i have heard the Manager's they have there do not really know what's going on in the real world. blink.gif blink.gif

Could they have been sabotaged by customers like me, who hate the things?

I was in Sainsbury's today and I was talking to some of the staff. They told me that most of the checkouts are closed because they haven't got the staff.

Which is a non-answer as it is evident they haven't the staff. Is it because they can't get them, or afford them? That is the question.

According to what I was told; they could get them if they wanted to, but they wanted to save money and put more work on the people who already work there.

Why don't they just take one member of staff off the normal checkouts to open all 12 self-service checkouts.

Seems quite simple to me.

What's the difference between 1 staff doing 10 hours or 2 staff doing 5 hours each? It makes no odds.

I do not go into either Sainsbury’s or Tesco’s, but prefer Marks and Spencer. Their checkouts are always well manned. You pay a bit extra for the food, but you get quality and good service. Worth the little extra. Sainsbury’s and Tesco’s seem to me to be a money machine only.

Heather, M&S are also a money making machine, they just use a different tactic to cater for their demographic of clientelle.

Bloggo, as well as a healthy bank balance.

It's all about cutting the contract base. If one person can man 4-6 self scans, why pay 4-6 staff to do the manual ones. I avoid TESCO as much as I can really, they are just interested in the bottom line. Poor service, poor hygiene... poor everything really!!! I've become quite fond of Waitrose since there are no Morrisons or ASDA to pop into when you need a few bits.
