We received a Voter registration Form, parts of which are simply illegible. Section 1 headings have been printed in a stupid way so that the text is not legible. Could any one please transcribe what it says for me. In particular, it is the the far right column that appears to state Edited Register.

Er...I was hoping someone might have a similar form that they could read! Or even better: someone who works at the council who reads this forum, might be able to clarify.

If I were any more cynical, I would suggest that it was deliberately obfuscated to lull people into committing to something they would rather not, but it is hard to see as I cannot read the text; it is not legible (and it is not my eyesight either).

I thought that I might be able to help you but when I looked at mine I had the same problem! However, I think that I can make an educated guess with a large amount of close scrutinisation!

Please write in BLOCK LETTERS Please state Postal Vote Jury Service Edited register
Surname First Name your Nationality Tick here if you exemption If you do not want to
and middle initial want a postal vote If you will be 70 or appear on the edited
application form over on15 October register then tick here
(see over) 2010 then tick here (see over)

Hope that this helps? wink.gif

Clear as mud! laugh.gif

I think there is serious side here, because I think it is to do with making your address details available for junk mail.

I actually spent ages putting the above into it's relevant columns but when I posted it scrambled it all together! So......

Column 1 Please write in BLOCK LETTERS - Surname

Column 2 First Name and middle initials

Column 3 Please state your Nationality

Column 4 Postal vote Tick here if you want a postal vote application form (see over)

Column 5 Jury Service exemption If you will be 70 or over on 15 October 2010 then tick here

Column 6 Edited register If you do not want to appear on the edited reister then tick here (see over)

Phew!!! blink.gif x

Hmm. They usually come pre-printed with the entries (names etc.) from the previous return.

There are two registers: the full one, which you can only inspect at libraries etc., and the edited one, which anyone can buy. You need to tick that column if you don't want to appear in the edited register.

When they are pre-printed, that column will be ticked for you anyway.

That's the problem with proportional fonts. If you need to keep something in column, you can use [ font ] tags to
force a fixed font
Just like this - I used Lucida Console here

On the back of the form it says "If you find it difficult to read this form we can send you a large print version. Please ring the helpline." I wonder if they had to hire large numbers of temporary staff to deal with the switchboard due to the "unprecedented large number of calls" they received! wink.gif x

Thanks everyone for the help! smile.gif

We had a situation where there was a tick in one box but not in the other, so I needed to know which meant what.

The print problem seems to stem from low resolution printing. The grey appears as dots and makes the white text barely legible in our case. So it wasn't the font, it was the format that was the problem.

So much for the proof reader or quality control! tongue.gif

I'm surprised you've only just received yours, though - mine came over a month ago (might have been longer).
