Shopping bags = killer eyes Options

Why is it that if I don't have my own bags when shopping in Sainsburys i am given the killer eyes...? I don't forget on purpose, I just never know when i'm going pop in there in the week. There is no room in my handbag to keep them otherwise I would. I use to keep them in the car but then forget to take them out when i parked. Doh! At home in my cupboard I must have about 40 bags (normal plastic ones and heavy duty bags) for when I do my big shopping, and as i'm at home before I go I remember and take them.

I'm asked 'Do you have your own bag', me 'No, sorry I didn't realize i was popping in today', which is then followed by a filthy look, a quiet tut and their bags shoved down towards me! I feel like saying okay then I won't buy my bloody shopping from you Since when was it turned into the crime of the century to not have your own bags? Give me a break - I do normally bring them.

Anyone else get this? Or is just me?

Why? Because they save £100,000's a year in not supplying carrier bags - all the environmental claims are a load of hog wash, if they were really worried about the environment they would be supplying re-cycled paper bags free of charge. M&S and Smiths even have the nerve to charge for their bags. Why the **** should I pay for carrier bags when I have spent possibly £100's on my weeks shopping with them. What happened to the good old days when the supermarkets would have all their old boxes behind the tills for customers to pack their shopping into?

I've never believed they did it for the environment, all companys love to hide behind that one. Trying to carry more than 2 boxes from a shop is quite difficult if your walking/old etc. I do like the idea of boxes, but it is not always pratical. Plus I like getting carrier bags - saves me buying them for my bins at home

Are you sure they give you the evil eye? I do the same, pop in on a whim and dont have bags with me which annoys me as I miss out on my Nectar points. Till person is always ok giving me bags.

M&S said they charge 5p and only 1.4p is profit which they give charity. These are the flimsy bags not the bag for life. Over 4p each bag for the large orders they put in? I think their buyer is having them over.

That's one thing they've got sorted in Ireland, at least - a 40c tax per plastic bag. You don't meet many people who forget to bring bags along when they go into a shop, nor do you see many littering up the place.

Exactly, these bags cost them less than 1p each - a lot less. I buy about 50,000 carrier bags a year and pay less than 1p and these are stronger than M&S's. Just add up all those 3p's they are making....

You rarely see people forget their bags over here in Lux either. It's 3 cents for each flimsy plastic bag, 50 cents for a medium sized 'for life' bag and 70 cents for a large one. The 'for life' bags are very handy for taking your glass bottles etc to the recyling stations too.

Your comment is right up there with one of my UK based colleagues who judged my husband based on his job (he was until leaving the UK a warehouse operative). Thing is, if he wasn't part of the team who sort out the supplies for Marks and Spencer, my colleague wouldn't have his posh frozen roast dinners!

I have utter respect for the sales assistants in the supermarkets over here. They are all multi-lingual. Something which a lot of British people aren't these days. I couldn't do their job without studying another language.

I have utter respect for the sales assistants in the supermarkets over here. They are all multi-lingual. Something which a lot of British people aren't these days. I couldn't do their job without studying another language.

We are not generally multi-lingual in this country as if you go to most other countries their second language is English - they only have to learn English to communicate the world over. On the other hand we are expected to learn every language just to go on a two week holiday! Saying that, out of courtesy - and the need to buy petrol if I'm driving across Europe I do learn the basics and how to count to twenty (just don't end up on petrol pump number 23!). A great example is whilst in France a waiter complained that my French was weak, then while trying to communicate with a Italian - without success - they both resorted to speaking English

Some people work in shops after retirement because they get bored and don't want the pressure associated with other vocations. Some do it because they refuse to go on benefits which is nobler than the workshy, some do it for the flexible hours after having children. Don't just assume they are all there because they can't do anything else. That's what WBC is for....

WOW John what a statement. A lot of people I know who are working as shop assistants are doing so to help pay for university. Now I am not saying they are the brains of britain but they surely must have something going on to be taking education that step higher ?? Recently in a discussion with a teacher she had the same prejudice and said that she did not want to be out doing her grocery shopping one day and see my son behind the till..... I have no qualifications but work hard. I don't get paid a lot and I am certainly not the sharpest knife in the drawer but I did find your posting a little sanctimonious (and yes I had to look that word up in the dictionary)

Oh come on, how can you even state that. It really annoys me when people think that someone doing a job that you don't need qualifications for is useless. I use to work at the services on the hot counter for quite a few years ago as my 2nd job to get more money and I loved it and did have to use my brain. Alot of my friends worked in the Burger King there full or part time because it was a job, and other friends would take the p**s out of them. Why? Who cares. They are working and not sat doing nothing. At least they had a job.When my son grows up if his 1st job was Mcdonalds I would be proud that he was working and not sat around at home being a bum. Obviously i'm hoping he will become a footballer and make me loads of dosh...

Also, I don't worry about what they think - it just annoys the **** out of me !
