Anyone who has gone to Scats cannot fail to notice how conveniently road lines up for the proposed route.

Interesting how in all the talk of roads and redevelopment, no mention of where the small businesses in Stirling Industrial Estate will go. Is it a case of "Sling yer 'ook, we can build executive flats here"?

Also love the 'intelligent' traffic light system at the Robin Hood. I've never seen any sign of intelligence. Not another vehicle in sight, anywhere and still sat at red. All seems very fixed timed cycle to me. Perhaps it's more self-aware than intelligent?

And why does their appear to be a 100 foot hole in the middle of station road? What are they doing - Drilling for oil?

Not much intelligence shown either by the many HGV drivers going North early in the mornings ( around 5 a.m. ), who hurtle straight through the red lights with no intention whatsoever of slowing down.

South on the A339 is even worse. Following the A4 under the fly-over is practically suicide now.

Perhaps I use the Robin Hood at different times of the day from the rest of you, but I have found the new layout and lighting to be a vast improvement. The lanes through the area are clearly marked, traffic approaching from Western Avenue is now actually able to get out now that junction is controlled, and traffic generally appears to flow much more smoothly.

The only problem is when I'm heading out towards the B4009 or Thatcham from the A339 North and I forget to move into the middle lane at the first set of lights.

I have been informed that the traffic lights in West Berkshire are designed to slow traffic down in the evenings (to prevent boy / girl racers from racing through the district) by changing to red as traffic approaches.

This is the case when I approach traffic lights in the evenings anyway, and you have to admit, as annoying as it is when you are sat at red lights with no other traffic around, it does work!!

Doesn't an 'intelligent' traffic light system mean that it changes the timing of it's cycles depending how heavy the flow of traffic is from a particular direction?

I don't know about that, but there is all ways a a big queue, heading north to the Police station roundabout on Sunday at midday.

Which is why they plan to spend £50k modifying the lights at that roundabout - as they have already done at the Robin Hood.

Glad to hear that. The King's Road (Police Station) roundabout is the main bottleneck for traffic on the A339 in Newbury.

The thing is, it sounds all good at the moment, but I think this is only to enable more local development, so it won't be long before the queues are back.

You've got to be kidding.

Try getting accross the "Burger King" roundabout to Queens or Greenham Road from St Johns at busy times. It's a nightmare as the traffic comimg down the A339 just uses the actual roundabout as an additional queueing space and block it completely.

I would love to see lights installed on that one too, or be given permission to drive a tank round there and see if the gits try blocking that in!

How come everytime the lights fail, all the queues disappear? Everything runs how a roundabout is designed to.
