I don't like the idea of restricting traffic movement ever. I have a lot of sympathy for lorry drivers, who are already subject to an incredible amount of restrictions. However there is a long history of regular accidents on this road, as we have discussed before on these boards. Are HGV's the cause? I can't imagine they are, if you restrict them to one lane, I foresee a long queue of cars in the outside lane travelling nose to tail, and not pulling back across, just like the rest of the A34 and most dual carriageways I've ever driven on.

I note on the Green Party candidate local election leaflet (sure it was a female from E Ilsley)
it proposed speed cameras along whole length , or was it reverting to horse + cart!

Oxon CC is just looking for headlines, it has no authority over traffic regulation on the A34 - not even the bit that runs through Oxfordshire.

It is a trunk road and only the Highways Agency have the necessary authority

As the A34 is a Trunk Road it doesn't fall under the control of OCC or WBC. The Highways Agency are the higher authority on the national strategic road network (motorways and Trunk Roads). If they approve, the minor Local Authorities comply. It doesn't generally work the other way around.

Don't these Green Party tree huggers realise that even tofu needs to actually get from where is made to where it is sold and that generally means there's an HGV involved somewhere along the line?

Which is probably why the article linked in the OP says THE Government is to be asked to ban lorries from overtaking on the A34 by Oxfordshire County Council. rather than OCC are to ban overtaking.

You will be able to go a bit faster now, from 6 April 2015, the speed limit for HGVs travelling on single and dual carriageways in England and Wales has increased.The national speed limits for HGVs over 7.5 tonnes, travelling on a single carriageway will increase from 40mph to 50mph. The speed limit for HGVs over 7.5 tonnes, travelling on dual carriageways will increase from 50mph to 60mph.
You will still get delayed though because of a lorry overtaking another lorry doing 60 while doing 61 mph.

And soon you'll be delayed getting onto the A34 from a slip road or behind some numpty 'Sunday driving' ar 60 mph and nowhere to pull in to the nearside - not to mention trying to get off the A34.

I never understood why lorries could only do 40 on the A4 - that's a lot better

Mainly due to the time and distance required to stop a fully-laden HGV (or at least reduce the impact speed to manageable).

Modern trucks have much improved over those when the limit was set (mush like cars) so it makes sense to raise the limit to 50 mph
