Closing and destroying a perfectly good power station to meet EU directives while the rest of the world builds more!
Oh well, up go the bills again. mellow.gif

I thought the power station was inefficient due to price and availability of coal hence its demise. Is that not correct.

Maybe you're right but the price of fuel commodities varies all the time.
What about the future price and availability of gas, which powers the other Didcot power station?
Bit like the short sighted closure of many railways in the past. If they had been left mothballed many would be invaluable now.

Sustainability isn't just wind farms and recycling refuse, it should also be about not wasting infrastructure as well. It does seem rather daft to destroy the station, one of the problems of our failure to properly manage foreign acquisitions of UK business.

There were some huge and what would have been initially very expensive transformers removed and disposed of, Transformers don't wear out like rotating machinery so there was an asset chucked away or did the French have them for one of their nuclear power stations.

I would be interested to know how much life was left in the generators and turbines and what happened to them. The cooling towers are just big lumps of concrete and I've never understood why we needed to lose heat using them that we have just generated as a by-product of the steam turbine why couldn't it be recycled back into the boilers. But what do I know. Why don't nuclear power stations have cooling towers or do they. So many questions.

I thought it had in part been changed to biomass? The same is happening to other power stations in the UK. Tilbury power station was shut down and converted to biomass, but after having a fire there just after being re-started they decided that partly due to government policy it was shut down. So there is at least 2 perfectly good power stations shut down whilst at the same time we are being told we could have a shortage of generating capacity.

I think Drax, the biggest UK power station, has been converted to biomass. mainly imported from the US & Canada!! rolleyes.gif

Drax (now partially converted) and Tilbury were, I think, drawing from the same source when I worked on them. The basic material came from Canada, it was taken to a processing plant in the US where it was turned into pellets. The Tilbury material was then shipped to Holland in large bulk carriers and then transhipped to Tilbury in two dedicated vessels that ran on a fairly close time table between the two ports.

Actually, the transformers were sent to Germany:

They have cooling ponds or are built adjacent to a large body of water (like the Irish Sea) that use a 'once through'. Reactors run at 300+ C and 200 plus bars.

Fast reactors are cooled with liquid sodium which than has a heat exchanger to water.

Quite right; like other UK coal powered stations being sacrificed on the green altar
whilst throwing ourselves on the output of the nice Mr Putin blink.gif

Never mind, at least in a vain attempt to replace the energy gap we now have planning approval for a massive windfarm off the Hampshire / Isle of Wight coast. Much better than those ugly cooling towers!! rolleyes.gif

I understand there is are groups of people camping out hoping to get a good view, all I know is that if you do go up there to watch, Chilton Garden Centre does a great breakfast! I run the restaurant there so I am a bit biased though smile.gif

Suffering a big carbon footprint no doubt, so cancelling some/all of benefits sad.gif
