So Reading will get connected to Crossrail! That makes far more sense than Maidenhead and augers well for the future. I had to go to London yesterday and used the H&C tube station at Paddington - a massive improvement. We'll soon be able to start collecting so the old boys at Didcot can buy one of our old Turbo trains!

What have they done to the Hammersmith and City then? It's just a platform, surely?

I did hear that a journey by Crossrail from Reading will take a fair bit longer and in less comfort than the equivalent by Intercity, so what is the benefit?

The old 1910 stairway, which I always thought pretty dangerous at peak times had gone. Wide staircase now. The trains have bendy connections so you can walk right through seats all against the windows so there seems much more space.

Yes, Ive also heard that train time might be longer but no changing on to the tube for a good many journeys and possibility of going right across on one train.

Ah right, thanks for the update. The old red trains no longer then. I used to enjoy my daily commute out to Hammersmith Broadway in comfort, against the flow of everyone else going into the city. smile.gif

(That's before my work moved to Docklands which made the journey a nightmare. Thank goodness I don't have to commute any more.)

The original plans for Crossrail always went as far west as Reading station, then due to cost cutting they decided to only go as far as Maidenhead or Slough.

The only thing that has changed now, is that the Great Western Line is being electrified (overhead wires), as we all know the electrification is coming down as far as Newbury.

The biggest cost of Crossrail was the tunneling under london, the second biggest cost was the electrification works. The fact is that work is now being done and so the Crossrail "extension" to Reading can be done at a much reduced cost.

This is yet another government U TURN, although this one is pretty good for the Thames Valley.

Was the cut back to Maidenhead by this government or the previous Labour administration.

Anyway I don't see changing plan as a problem. Hiding of facts, Lies and not admitting when you get it wrong are the main problems with all levels of Government in my view.

Turbos are being refreshed yet again OTE!
And when they are finished in Thames Valley they will have a new life in the West, mainly in the Bristol area replacing the awful "nodding donkeys". (And you think you have had it bad!!)

Brand new trains Jeff.

The advantage will be to those who wish to travel beyond Paddington as they will not have to change to LT.
I think it will mainly serve those places between Reading & London who currently have to use FGW.
I will significantly increase the capacity of the line into Paddington and beyond.
If you decide to use it when it opens make sure you don't drink too much coffee before you go as apparently they new trains will have the modern, advanced feature of no toilets!! wacko.gif

I don't care! tongue.gif

Presumably this is just to keep the spirit of Bristol and the old Great Western alive, as Betjeman has it:

The old Great Western Railway shakes,
The old Great Western Railway spins,
The old Great Western Railway makes
Me very sorry for my sins

Quite!

They are free in Newbury and Reading and even on those Turbo trains, Paddington though was 30p last time I called, which I thought I'd save by waiting 'till I got to Piccadilly, where it also used to be free ---- it's now 50p! And there are no change machines.

So did you go back to Paddington to save 20p? smile.gif

Yes, the toilets on the turbos leave a great deal to be desired and should only be used in an emergency!
What cracks me up is the scrotes who hide themselves in there in order to get a free ride.
I think they deserve one after suffering that!! laugh.gif
PS, the current turbo refresh is providing "accessible" toilets for the less able.

Trains are horrible, horrible things.
I use them enough to say that with 100% certainty

I am very happy to see Crossrail coming.

The tube from Paddington into the City is painfully slow, and sometimes takes longer than getting to Paddington from Reading.

I used to walk from the station down to Lancaster Gate and get the Central Line just to avoid that northern loop of the tube.

It was a very quiet day after the last post. Was everyone tunneling under my home?
I was impressed by the number of positive points about the works. The road diversions are a pain for bus users.
There are certainly going to be changes along the route. Tottenham Ct Road is being massively improved.
After all, my fave shop Primark has a brand new outlet. Sartorial elegance close to chez moi.

Thinking of the number of folk from Newbury passing through, any chance Simon Kirby of a London branch of Newts?
And I don't intend to offer a toilet stop for turbo travellers... sad.gif
