The problem is not just pot holes per se, but awful road surfaces that are breaking up generally. They are awful to drive or ride on.

Quite so, as Simon so rightly says in a previous response, we've forgotten how to build roads.

Red Shute Hill is a disaster, especially near the T junction at the Hermitage end.

I agree. Somebody who cycles and drives a car I notice it quite a bit.

I think you will find that it's not only West Berkshire, most counties have areas of bad road surfaces just lately. Simon is correct about the lack of ditches, i remember when there were council workers designated with the job of keeping them clear.

Yes but now of course we need administrators to run our local councils empires and expenditure is needed for new dressing up kit. Far more important than ditch cleaning? rolleyes.gif

I don't think you've even been out of West Berkshire with a comment like that
You tried driving the A43 lately?

Why not just pick any old road in England? That has no relevance to West Berkshire.

The A43 is a primary route in the English Midlands, that runs from the M40 motorway near Ardley in Oxfordshire to Stamford in Lincolnshire.

Perhaps he's been driving on the A43 lately and in comparison to the roads in West Berkshire it was worse?

That might be the relevance.

The section of Fifth Road between Buckingham Road and the school entrance has completely broken up, although it was recently completely resurfaced. I can understand old surfaces developing potholes, but it looks as though this resurfacing was done on the cheap. With any luck the contractors will be held responsible and we won't have to pay again.

I think that the contractors only resurfaced the road by the new exit from the school into fifth road and didnt resurface to the junction but could be wrong. But the whole fifth road road needs resurfacing especially by the shop which is very quickly turning into a dirt track, but I expect the council will do the same as they did last time waste money on doing a temporary repair.

See above..... And I think it has plenty of relevance, to say the roads improve as soon as you leave West Berkshire is a load of crap having been all over the country in my car I have it on good authority they most certainly do not improve at all. As with women in bars there are some good ones and some bad ones everywhere you go.

My boyfriend did some damage to his car because of potholes. Those holes are dangerous and should be fixed as soon as reported.

Did he report the potholes that damaged his car, and, if so, were they fixed as soon as he did?

No certainly not fixed straight away. Even when they are fixed it usually only lasts a couple of days before it becomes a pothole again with the infill tarmac that was patted in with the back of a shovel causing problems.
Still having said that the one on the westbound A4 just before the Newbury Manor Hotel lasted three days so they are obviously being a bit more studious with the back of the shovel or the tarmac is a slightly higher quality? laugh.gif

Well I don't need to post balanced arguments when someone posts rubbish laugh.gif

I've driven all over the country and can absolutely say the roads are no better anywhere else in the country than they are in West Berkshire "overall".
And the A43 is particularly bad, especially heading South. Very severe dips, potholes and cracks.

I go to Santa Pod often and also customer sites for work so I head up and down there very regularly.

P.s Bubbles I hope as a woman you are allowed outside of West Berkshire, just as long as you're home in time to make me a Sandwich*.

*that is a joke. **

**unless you actually were kind enough to make me a Sandwich***

***and if you did I would probably do the washing up and say thankyou hunnybuns.

Pot holes are a serious problem unfortunately there isn't the money around to deal with them immediately. The money has to be prioritized around the country. Some estimates say that it will take many years to get a clean and even surfaces.

The good news is that Fifth Road now has a triangular sign at the entrance from Buckingham Road that looks like two t.its but warns us of an uneven surface.
Excellent perception of a long term problem by WBC and a well thought out solution.
If motormad gets his front spoiler ripped off, they can say 'told you so'.

WBC deals with our local roads including the 'B' roads. The 'A' roads are the responsibility of the Dept of Transport or whatever the national team call themselves now.
