QUOTE (Sherlock @ Jan 19 2013, 10:29 AM) Great to see that Maplin are likely to open a branch in Newbury: with them and a cinema there's even less reason to go to Basingstoke, which can only be a good thing.
I'm not quite sure how Maplin manage it - the sort of thing they sell is usually available much more cheaply on Ebay - but they do. Perhaps those of us who buy this sort of thing can't resist the lure of actually seeing all those shiny bits and pieces on their shelves. At the risk of sounding totally obtuse , what do they sell ?

Apparently the Maplin in Reading is preferable to some (less hassle, cost and somewhere to buy your lunch nearby) so they may be wasting effort with opening in Newbury

QUOTE (Sherlock @ Jan 19 2013, 11:36 AM) I'm afraid if you don't already know you're unlikely to be interested in their stock.... Good job the stores themselves don't use your advice!

QUOTE (gel @ Jan 19 2013, 02:58 PM) If you can remember TANDY, very similar offer. Indeed, so as I say it's a bit surprising that Maplin appear to be doing so well. Glad that they are, though.

QUOTE (JeffG @ Jan 19 2013, 04:03 PM) Cloak and cane would be acceptable. In the present economic climate they would probably let me in wearing bermuda shorts and head scarf .

I'm not sure but I think that Maplin is the retail division of RS Components. They are one of the major suppliers to the trade and have always done well.

QUOTE (Jonno @ Feb 1 2013, 03:12 PM) At last! Somewhere for middle aged men like me to be parked while the other half is shopping. A shame it isn't on an out-of-town site though, so you can actually park out side it - for free - while you go in to buy something. Park in Sainsburys and get some exercise as well.
