The Games of the NewburyToday 2012 Legolympiad: Perseus against Achilles

The proposition is: 20 mph speed limits on all residential roads will save children's lives.

Arguing for the proposition is Perseus, and arguing against the proposition is Achilles.

When the heros have completed their contest a poll will open in this thread, so please vote for the hero you feel argued their position the best. The thread will be open for comments then too, though please try not to comment until the debate has finished. Many thanks.

Perseus says:

I am not sure that children's lives will be saved a blnket urban speed limit.

From a simple observational stance I see too many buggy pushers on the phone
whilst shouting at Kaylee a hundred yards away on a scooter."Stop at the road".
The road in question might be bigger, with a statutory 30 mph limit.
Still a 16 wheeler is no place for a child to find out about road safety.

The Green party have a policy to try and make urban roads safer for children.
I have no problem with this as speeds are lower anyway. These days.
Children don't play cricket in the street anymore.

In the end it is a pontless policy.Children have enough sense not to ramble.
The ones who might be outside during a highspeed twocking chase should be in bed or at least tweeting.

The accidents that have claimed lives seem to have been caused by criminal wrong doers.

It seems that Perseus is actually arguing against the proposition? It says Perseus is arguing in favour of the proposal, that they save lifes, but his argument is the opposite.

Yes Timbo. Perseus does seem to have taken a wrong turning on the debate.

I was always troubled as a teen .So I have been supportive of the Stephen Lowe trust.
Just a local gang of mothers, who lost someone unexpectedly.I was lucky to not lose a child.

Just to regularise a little misunderstanding - Achilles will now argue for the proposition, and Perseus will continue to argue against the proposition.

Achilles says:

Twenty is plenty, to be honest when we’re all in a hurry and get up to higher speeds we all just end up clogging the already congested roads around Newbury and slowing everything down anyway. The national situation is the same so I believe that by going slower we all end up actually going faster.

There are hundreds of children killed on our roads every year in the UK, normally the accident is down to not the speed of the car, but the speed of the drivers reactions. If we were all doing twenty, we would have consistency and everybody would develop more consistent skills.

Modern cars are also built with crumple zones and some modern cars (Kia’s, for example or anything French) are being made with thinner and thinner metal. A child being hit by one of these at twenty, means that a child will only suffer mild bruising because the rest of the car isn’t really involved. In the case of a Kia doing thirty, it has already started to rattle itself apart and the larger heavier bits are exposed, all at child head level. By doing twenty through speed bump, drivers will be more likely to keep in a straight line rather than weaving between the cushions. Little Susie and Jonny runaround are more likely to be able to run out and across the path of a car without it swerving into them to avoid a speed bump. Children are our future, but they’re also idiots when it comes to road safety, they look to us to protect them, let’s not let them down.
