QUOTE (Grumpy @ Apr 20 2012, 10:48 PM) Having visited the new John Lewis Store earlier today, I fear that Camp Hopson will not be able to compete with the new arrival on it's doorstep. Jonathan will have something up his sleeve.

I really think there is room for both. JL do not sell clothes for instance. Camps's tend to be a bit confusing. If you need t-towels, you locate the homeware section only to find they are in a different building.

QUOTE (Strafin @ Apr 21 2012, 10:59 AM) Camp Hopsons is a department store right? Doesn't that mean it rents the floor space to the independent retailers as well as having it's own stuff? Yes, same as John Lewis. Surprised to see Hotel Chocolate in the JL store when there is a Hotel Chocolate shop almost opposite.

QUOTE (Jayjay @ Apr 21 2012, 08:09 AM) I really think there is room for both. JL do not sell clothes for instance. I think I would agree. The new JL store will increase footfall and may mean less people going to Basingstoke and Reading. Once Camp Hobson have got over the initial shock, I am sure they can tailor (no pun intended) their merchandise offering.

As I understand the situation, there was a rather devious plan for House of Fraser to purchase Camp Hopson, once the Parkway complex was complete. Unfortunately that plan was scuppered when John Lewis took an interest. (You may remember that House of Fraser objected to the John Lewis planning permission). Standard Life were obviously desperate to sign John Lewis, otherwise tenants signing up for their new development were very few and far between. Council had to bend over backwards to give JL their planning permission otherwise Parkway would have been a white elephant. I am still not convinced that Parkway is a success. Time will tell. http://www.newburytoday.co.uk/2011/old-news-article-15659

If current tennants start to leave, then I think you could say it was a white elephant.....

QUOTE (dannyboy @ Apr 24 2012, 10:00 AM) Why would HoF want CH? If the shareholders had lost confidence that the present management team were unlikely to deliver dividends on their investment then a sweet deal from HoF may have been accepted and perhaps HoF saw an opportunity to run a profitable operation. QUOTE Not much of PW is left to rent apart from 'kiosks' & small units. If current tennants start to leave, then I think you could say it was a white elephant..... I suspect that the high end jewellers in PW will be struggling to sell product at such high prices. I mean how many Omega and Breitling watches are going to be bought each week? I can't see that much of the present passing trade can afford them.
