We are all used to cyclists flying around in the dark without lights, but since the longer evenings started I have yet to fail to see one or more cars/vans with failed lights every time I go out.

I have seen some where both sidelight are headlamp are out, looking like a motorcycle until your own light beams hit them.

By my estimate, it is about 1 in 10 vehicles.

It is dangerous. it is illegal; why do people do this for the sake of the cost of a bulb? Or do they simply not ever check their lights?

Or people who drive around with their sidelights on and then their foglights. *punches them in the face*

My car tells me if I have a bulb out, as does most other VW from 2003 onwards, most BMWs nowadays do as well. It's probably a combination of people who are so dim (pun intended) that they don't notice they have a light out or that they don't care.

There really is no excuse. ohmy.gif

Not ever checked, I guess is the answer. It sometimes takes 2 to make sure.

I agree Xjay that the number of cars with failed lights is increasing.
It used to be a regular way for Police to stop and check. They often do it these days with multi agency stops.
Red Diesel,Lead in the truck, DHSS. HMRC. They are going for countryside theft. That is daytime.
I suppose the vehicles are checked as well.

But the late night car with one light is just as much trouble.

It's not as bad as the complete and utter prat who was behind me about a month ago with only one headlamp working. He or she obviously knew one of the bulbs was blown, as he/she was using FULL BEAMS to compensate!! Said driver only dimmed them when we were faced with oncoming traffic, yet saw fit to put them back onto full beam when the cars had passed. It appeared it was fine to blind me in my mirrors!

Now, THAT is dangerous.

My SOS message to him using my brake lights on several occaisions may have been equally as childish, but hey ho!!

Only in thick fog.

You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves.

yeah great logic by the dear old government!! Front fog lights obscure brake lights! rolleyes.gif Although the rear ones do yes.. unless they mean dazzle others=front and obscure brake lights=rear however let's assume they're not that grammatically good.

Yesterday evening in reading there was some woman in a honda jazz or some other crapbox who had her rear foglight on. It was not foggy. More that that though are those people who have headlights which flat out blind you. stupid stupid stupid.

CBW, what you could have done was move into the oncomming lane, brake so the car goes infront of you, and then pull in behind him and give him a taste of the SHINING LIGHTS!!!!!!!!!!!

1 in 10!
Cars must have all lights working correctly to pass the MOT so they must be failing within a year.
Perhaps the standard and quality of bulb manufacture needs to be improved.
Having said that it is easy to check your lights on a regular basis bust most can't be arsed!

No - they must be failing within ten years.

I couldn't possibly suggest that I was or otherwise being completely honest in my deception. On the contrary, I would say that it is or isn't probably true.

Don't confuse fog lights with Daylight Running Lights. My DRL's are on when heads are not, and they sit in the front fog cluster. they only have a 21w bulb though. smile.gif

Perhaps it's a while since you had your car tested, but it's been 3 years since 1967 biggrin.gif

Cars must have all lights working correctly to pass the MOT so they must be failing within a year of being tested for Christ's sake!! You knew perfectly well what I meant.
There arn't arf some clever buggers on here! (Or think they are.) blink.gif
I mean, come on, there can't be many cars that go ten years without a bulb going so obviously just a clever remark purely for the sake of it. happy.gif

I don't, and I'm not. 'Cause they aren't INCREDIBLY DISTRACTING.

DRLS = ok. not blinding anyone. hardly noticeable to be honest.

foglights = not ok = punch in the face.

People clearly have 1 bulb out and their SIDELIGHTS on and foglights, or alternatively have 1 dipped beam bulb out and then their foglights on. Why. JUST CHANGE YOUR BULB. And even if you can't remove the bulbs because of space (this is a genuine problem for a surprising amount of cars) - DEAL WITH IT. I used to be OK but when I changed my lights, means there's no longer space to change the bulbs with the lights in the car. I can drop my front bumper, remove both my lights and change all the bulbs and put it all back together in under 40 minutes. Not even a quarter of a Saturday mornings work.

Or those who don't even bother with headlights and drive around in the dark without them on. I am behind you flashing away. I go infront of you, flash my fog light, turn my lights off, back on, and again - nothing. No lights at all at 11pm at night. mellow.gif dry.gif rolleyes.gif

Well, during a ten mile drive this morning while it was still on the dark side, I counted seven cars with only one headlamp working. It was hard not to notice, having followed this discussion!
