How many eateries/coffee shops can Newbury sustain?
Very little chance of anyone being brave enough to take one of the units under the cinema.

If it succeeds then yes, if it or another one fails because of it, then no.

If I wanted to be charged £3 for Coffee that wasn't an Iced Frapachino (not to be confused with a Fapinchinos) I would definitely go and enjoy being ripped off.

All the while it's tricky to find somewhere to sit during most of the day in Costa/Starbucks or any of the other town centre coffee places then I imagine that it will do just fine.

Lets see now
We have Costa Coffee Northbrook street,
Costa Coffee Parkway,
Boswells Kennet Centre,
Munchies Kennet Centre,
Cafe Nero Kennet Centre,
The Juice come coffee bar in West Mills, Camp Hopsons,
Marks and Spencer,
John Lewis,
Hetheringtons Broadway
Hetheringtons Bartholomew
The Coffee Shop in Weavers Walk
Starbucks.
The Christian owned and run one plus the other that make great sandwiches whose name escapes me in the Arcade
The baguette house in Northcroft lane
A sandwich bar in the Bartholomew Street
The sandwich bar in Inches Yard
The Empire Cafe in Cheap Street.
Then the little coffee shop come French cafe in the Wharf
and the great little coffee shop come cafe tea shop in the Stone Building,
The Corn Exchange coffee bar is now run by the same people.
MacDonald’s
The market Place we have Ask
The Spanish Tappas, they both sell coffee inside and out.
There is also a little Portuguese sandwich /coffee shop in the Market Place as well
So that is I think that is about 24 outlets where you can buy a coffee. 25 if you count the Cornish Pasty Shop. There is no doubt a little over supply at this time. I know for certain that Cost in Northbrook Street and Camps are very down on trade and at some point something will have to give, Starbucks are hit very hard, that’s just market forces, the council at some point will start to think about 'user' but at this time they are just desperate to help fill Parkway that is also under performing in general terms. I am surprised that Lavazza have taken the bold step, I would not invest my cash into that location. Of course the Hatchet now also sells coffee as do other town centre pubs.
The wiser money would stay away, but the difficulty with large operations such as the type that Lavazza wish to be is that they believe all the marketing hype, some of us know that the demographics in Newbury won’t support this level in the longer term and all we are doing is robbing Peter to pay Paul with town centre trade.
The town faces even greater pressure in economic terms in the months to come. In my business we remain very cautious and we are keeping a very close watch on costs. Of course we have to be outwardly positive, but it’s fool who does not say The King is not wearing any clothes !

The Ponzi scheme that is the World banking system is failing. Banks will close and law and order will break down. So am I concerned about a coffee shop that will no doubt fail in the long run? No I'm not.

Worried I think you're missing the point.
There's a difference between a COFFEE SHOP and a shop that sells coffee. I'm sure I could buy coffee in all manner of places, in fact Ridgeway VW and Ford dealers at the retail park have coffee machines, why don't you add them to the list? You'll have 27 then..
Coffee shops are where middle aged (so only slightly older than me) women congregate to discuss men, babies, tampons and that yoghurt with some Biffidus Madeupium or whatever it's called, and how they always have that bloated feeling because they are too stuck up to fart.
If you go to a restaurant you generally have normal people, who buy a larger meal - these are places where you may go to avoid having to cook, or on a date with a nice lady, or take a relative out for a silly yearly occurrence such as Fathers or Mothers Day, birthdays or Christmas.
You see? There's a difference..
The only thing is having 2 Costa's so close to each other..

Agreed. It's largely self regulating anyway. If there isn't enough trade for all the coffee places in town then the worst performing ones will go. They will have to ask themselves why they are the worst performing ones.
Whenever I've been to Costa in Northbrook street there has always been a queue and often it's hard to find somewhere to sit. I've given up going to Starbucks because I can never find anywhere to sit in there.

It's all a matter of supply & demand - simple as that.
If there is no demand then the business will not succeed.
It's a bit like locals saying they do not want a new Tesco in the area.
If they don't want it then who are the people who use it?
As I have said before - the people get what the people want.

Coffee is what people like to do, just to sit and watch the world go by, it's very much a leisure activity at the moment. The point if there is one to make is that there is a market driven over supply, (the strongest forgive the pun) of the mainstream coffee shops will survive. I hope Lavazza does ok because at the bottom of all this is local people doing local work and we don't want people to lose hard won jobs.

Worried missed out Cafe Rouge, a recent arrival in Parkway. I have heard that they are struggling to find customers at the moment.
Reducing their prices might help.

You can also get coffee is most, if not all, the 30 or so pubs in town - but they, like most of the other examples are not primarily there to sell coffee. Starbucks, Nero, Costa and one or two more are the competition for Lavazza - all of whom will get my trade in preference to Lavazza if it is decorated like the photograph in the online article.
As for coffee at car dealerships - I usually have a couple - part of this is down to it being free. Though I have never gone to a dealership just to get a cup of coffee.

I have spoken on other forums of sharing Venice's Florians with the likes of a century or more of famous figures.
Yup it cost. A couple of Williams(pear) grappa, a glass of iced water and a coffee that tasted like mud .
It was a good time.
I don't really like buying coffee in a paper mug. I can do better at home. Wizout ze straw.
The other abroad coffee was a treat by Mrs NM. Local Grappa and a coffee in Sorrento. I am not sure which had the antifreeze.
Totally shocking.

May I recommend Silva Robinson in the Market Place, run by my friend Steve and his wife Augusta? As well as serving excellent coffee which recently won a competition, the business is also a delicatessen selling an amazing range of Portuguese food.
It is a local business and not a part of an impersonal, multi-national chain.

There we are. A colleague of mine who has family and business connections with the former Soviet block says that a good few still hanker after the old approach. After coming over here, one remarked 'You had a job, didn't have to do over much, had your teeth done on the state, kids through education without cash from you, plus three weeks on the Black Sea every Summer and your choice of coffee was easy - you couldn't critizice the Government - but so what.

That, Brewmaster, is good to hear. There is a lot of trouble twixt Portuguese and Norfolk folk.
Thetford comes to mind. There is a Deli in Dereham that I make a point of using for Salt Cod
and odd hams.(Sounds like me). The shop window is full of Fado CDs... not my style. But it is busy.
Along with the Cafee, which I am too shy to try.

It was Shortbread. The bill hits the Visa. Pretty soon.
The chocolate and the nice smile was free.
The rather annoying thing about BMW presently is that service functions are detailed at various mileages/dates.
The complication is that you have to keep taking the darn thing back for another bit of hot chocolate and shortbread.

Lots of coffee shops, but it would be nice to have a chilled out adult one. Grown ups drinking good coffee in quiet surroundings with some chilled classics or soft jazz in the background. Thanks to Starbucks making coffee.'cool' with teens, you can't get a cup in town without overhearing "oh my god" a million times.
