I have discovered 5 copies of Steam Railway magazine from March to July 1992, plus Waterloo Sunset, about the 25th anniversary of the end of Southern steam.

Knowing that there are a number of steam railway enthusiasts on this forum, I thought I would offer these magazines rather than throw them out.

If anyone would like these, please PM me to arrange handover.

Try Sharpes, always treated me well. Much cheaper than dealer and just as good. Not open Saturdays though.

Thanks. I take it you mean Sharp’s Autos in Bone Lane?

Does anyone know of a good, reliable firm of motor engineers within about a 40-50 mile radius of Newbury who will undertake a clutch replacement?

How long does it normally take for the online version of the 'NWN' to appear?

The current one is dated May 22, which is hardly up-to-date, although I have seen them more recent than 4 weeks old. I phoned the paper on Friday and enquired, but (unsurprisingly) the person I spoke to didn't know and couldn't find anyone who did.

No so I'm afraid, only Squeak and Wilfred (British War Medal & Victory Medal). But an MM is a pretty good substitute for Pip.

My mistake! I have my father's two on the right, but I mistook the MM for the missing one. He didn't join until 1915, so never got Pip.

I should have recognised the MM; my uncle won it with bar in the 8th Royal Berkshire Regiment.

I know very little about European politics other than the at-times flaky stability of the Mediterranean nations, and the some-time *marshal* excesses of the northern Europeans.

I have to say, for all of my bleeding-heart vegetarian pacifism, it was the big old Vulcan that I enjoyed most at the Southend air show - really, really LOUD!!!!!

I didn't know they ever had an air show at Bradfield! rolleyes.gif

On 16th June this year local members of the Campaign for Real Ale will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the formation of the Newbury branch. We are anxious to get in touch with some of the members who were active at that time but with whom we have lost contact, namely Adrian Adams, David Wright, Chris McGrath, Glyn Davis, Andy Smith, Denis Maynard, Mary and Denis Bradbury, Paul Hancock, Roger Shelton, Jackie Cragg, Martin Dennison, Bob Buxey, Mike Pritchard, Mike Swanborough, Geoff Forbes, Richard Smith and Denis Picot.

If any of you mentioned are reading this, or if any forum member knows the whereabouts of any of these former colleagues, please pm me with full details so that we can send invitations to the celebration party.

The A338 between junction 14 of the M4 and Wantage is closed at Great Shefford because of flooding.

The road from Great Shefford to Lambourn is closed at Eastbury. To get to Lambourn from the M4 use the B4000 via Lambourn Woodlands.

I wonder what excuse/reason he/they will use for the forums being down then?

rolleyes.gif

I spoke to him the other day, and the problem has been with hacking, with certain people's posts being deleted, etc. Hardly an excuse.

He is proposing to change the software used, and then set it up again.

I am glad, because I preferred it to this one.

The Tally Ho, Hungerford Newtown, Berkshire RG17 0PP, re-opens on Friday 8th November at 6.30 pm

This was a good local pub until it was closed by the owners, Wadworth, nearly 2 years ago and sold to a property development company. A community action group campaigned to get the planning application for housing rejected, then raised money to buy the pub and renovate it.

If you are within striking distance of Hungerford, come along and support this venture. Hungerford Newtown is about half a mile south of M4 junction 14 on the A338.

Declaration of interest - I am a shareholder.

Like it or not a pub is a commercial proposition same as any other. If it really was contributing to the community - then it would be viable, no matter the worth of the premises. Same as the village shop, bus service, garage, etc. etc. use it or loose it!

You mean lose it.
QUOTE
Can't see the rationale behind any petition to HMG? Arguably, a 'sense of community' could also be developed out of better use of other existing premises such as the village hall.

There are no other facilities in Hungerford Newtown - no shop, no village hall, no school. So it was contributing to the community as the only social centre.

Anyone else thinking that if the locals had used their local a bit more when it was open as a pub they'd not now be trying to stop the building being converted to a different use?

A typical example of nonsense due to lack of knowledge of the situation.

The couple who were running the pub until January were doing so well that they entered into negotiations with the owners, Wadworths, to buy the business.

Instead Wadworths chose to sell the pub to a property developer who promptly closed it and applied for planning permission to turn it into houses.

There is a working group with a business plan to purchase the pub and re-open it. Already there are enough promises from potential investors for half the required cost. The petition on the campaign's website - http://www.savethetally.org.uk/ - now has nearly 250 signatures. The campaign is supported by local MP Richard Benyon and by CAMRA.

Need any more facts corrected?

So can anyone here recommend a good local garage that might just possibly be willing to let me give them some money? Who have you used that's good? Any suggestions welcome thank you!

David Jones on 07778176336. He has a workshop at Shefford Woodlands, but he also operates mobile, so he could do the work at your premises.

No of course not. But travellers are not a race, they have a lifestyle. And a very anti-social environmentally damaging one at that.

I totally agree. If they didn't behave in the way they do, people would not be prejudiced against them.

It couldn't be a racist comment; the French are not of a different race.
