Just looking online and as most people know Newbury Buses don't run that many services anymore, in fact they don't run any apart from the Vodafone contract.

Routes 1(Jet Black) & 6/6a are both sub contracted to Newbury & District (Weavaway)

So there is really no need for Newbury/ Reading buses being in Newbury anymore. Why don't they just give up the contracts and let Newbury & District take the routes in their own name?

Maybe it should be called "West Berkshire District Council Buses" as the council simply hire the bus and the driver from N&D and then set the fares etc. The deal is set up to ensure no risk to the bus companies.

Jet Black and 6 / 6a obviously make money because Reading Buses contract the work to N&D.

As the council are effectively responsible for all of our bus services, why won't they introduce child fares before 9am??

So who runs all the other buses?

Tried to find out - but the best thing I found was:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCyEMrtMYjM

Film of Newbury bus station in 1989 when it was on the Wharf again while they knocked down a multi-storey car park to provide the current bus station (the previous bus station being required as the site of a multi-storey car park ...).

Don't bother to watch too much unless you are bus obsessed (the cameraman obviously was).

N&D run majority of services on contract to WBC, Reading Buses have the contract for Jet Black and 6 / 6a but contract them out to N&D and I believe Heyfordia run the Lambourn service and Stagecoach do the Basingstoke and Andover routes.

It may well be, what does it matter who runs them if they do so reasonably efficiently and are cheaper than the other bidders?

JetBlack is a commercial service and not a council contract.

I use 6/6a everyday and since the take over. It is full pretty much every weekday morning whereas it wasn'tbefore. I can't say why, to me there is no difference in the service.

I think the new buses have slightly less seats, but certainly the operators are delighted with the useage levels. Jet Black and 6 / 6a are provided by Reading Buses officially, but they contract N&D to provide buses and staff for those services.

They won the contract, its up to them how they run them.
