Having just trawled through this week's edition of the NWN the one thing that is blatantly apparent is the diminishing column inches given over to the letters page.At one time it would cover 3 or 4 pages, now it has difficulty in fitting in one.
Now I appreciate there may be a logical answer but considering how this forum has expanded over recent years I can't think its just down to writer apathy by the local populace.
Perhaps an NWN spokesperson would care to comment , not only on this , but also on why a cross section of forum views are no longer printed .

ps . In case some bright spark suggests I write to them ......... angry.gif

I agree with you. The letters' page is the heart of the community (or it should be). As we only have one local paper 4 or 5 pages (even) more devoted to your readers views would be a good idea. One wonders if there is an ulterior motive for the dwindling letter's page? Granted celebrities, MPs, important people (or just people who are in well off areas) get to sail through.

I'm sad to see the letters page dwindle too. Should it get any worse, It would be a deal breaker for me in the end.

The trouble is the NWN has a monopoly so they can do what they want. Competition might change their direction but I can't see that happening any time soon.

Totally agree. Most weeks it is more of a platform for councillors to have a pop at their oppositite number.

I've written in every week for the past 3 weeks - nothing printed. Real shame.

If you live in a certain area or you are nobody then you haven't got a chance. Write another letter and sign it Jesus and that you regard the editor as a disciple, then you might get an audience with the editor and - providing he isn't an atheist - get printed. wink.gif

Given who Jesus would be amongst, if they are going by address - He wouldn't get one published either! wink.gif

It was worth the 70p this week for the salacious picture on the front cover of Out & About. I have canvassed a few female horseriders and they assure me that they would not ride a great big horse in a flimsy see through dress. The picture is only second to the girl with bicycle that fronted the magazine a few months ago.
I wonder if it's worth while writing a letter to the editor about it.

The letters page is one of the best bits for me, but it's not been very good lately.

The quality of the letters can be quite poor, often either rambling or just dreary political bun-fighting. I would like to see more well-crafted, considered, constructive, and articulate letters challenging the sleepy establishment and keeping it real.

What did you write about? Anything you'd like to talk to us about here?

Only if it is going to get published; and what do you think of the odds of that happening?

I agree. It is nice to read the thoughts of Newbury citizens.

Even Stan Green seemed to be rambling a bit this week.
