Has anybody heard anything further about the roadworks that were scheduled for the A339 at Knightsbridge? (By Darling Buds Nursery). Think these were scheduled to start March/April and would mean traffic lights 24 hrs a day for a good 10 months or so whilst the bridge goes down to one lane for strenghening works.

Have had a quick search on the web and cannot see anythng obvious.

I haven't heard anything until now.

I hate roadworks. Anyone who's driven to Reading the last few weeks will know what I'm on about - Traffic lights about 3/4 of a mile past Woolhampton, for on obvious reason.
I am sure there will be a reduced speed limit, probably to protect the workforce who undoubtedly won't be working, they will either be in the loo reading a magazine or in a portacabin having a health and safety meeting.

That is, if I am correct in my location, a very busy route used by untold millions.
I would not be surprised if they had a health and safety van "escorting" traffic back and forth.
Because a fat bloke with a builders bum can tell me when it's safe to go... there are temporary traffic lights AND an escort? How ridiculous is that?

I presume you mean "no obvious reason"?

It's obvious to me that they are there to temporarily protect the traffic entering and emerging from Froud's Lane which all traffic has to use at present as the A340 is closed at the main A4 intersection roundabout due to railway bridge works..

Yes thanks, sometimes I type faster than my brain can keep with up nowtwtwjgadghdsgdsgjdjjgdj *steam coming out of ears*

My Dad said it was that but I said it was stupid because people have eyes and can see when it's clear to come out. The volume of traffic is not THAT massive, ok it's more than normal but that's like saying you had 2 shots of milk before bed as opposed to 1. It doesn't really make much difference.

I hate traffic lights in general because - you approach them and then they go red. So they will be green for a 200m drive and then when you are 5m away from them, BANG - Red. angry.gif angry.gif
And these ones on the A4 seem to default to the Froud Lane side which means cars doing 60 (or in my case 59) have to brake, come to a stop for 1 second and then accelerate away again.

Is that very carbo-friendly?

Yep could "fun" this is the main road for alot of traffic travelling from Newbury to Basingstoke. I am afraid to say I will be one of the locals making the most of "rat runs" through the surrounding villages if the queues are too bad as I certainly cannot afford another 30 miles of fuel each day going via the A34 and M3.

Well I guess anyone tempted to use the Headley ford as a short cut for these 51 weeks will be put off?

As for the work on the A340, which has already taken an age with Frouds Lane taking an endless stream of Earthline trucks on a road (and a couple of narrow bridges) that were never built for this sort of abuse, I hear that the abutments for the replacement railbridge collapsed onto the line and now this work will go on until September or October!! (I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned in the NWN as I haven't bought one for a few weeks)

I am told the abutments were found to be not as strong as was envisaged, a problem that was not realised until the bridge was removed.
They now have to be rebuilt thus prolonging the work.
Not sure they collapsed on the line though!

Are we talking about the same place? The notice says 10 May 2012 to 11 May 2012. I know the days seem longer but ....

Hmm.... You're probably right. Small talk over a few beers and a story made more dramatic without need. But it has been extended for a considerable number of weeks and this is becoming a real pain for commuters using the A4 (as well as the diverted A340)

I was going by what Nelly had said about the signs saying 'for 51 weeks'

Looks like there's three sets of works on this road, one goes on for much longer.

Depends where you are travelling from/to, but my other half tells me that travelling along the A340 through Tadley and then through Brimptom is quicker than taking the A339 from Basingstoke to Newbury. Especially if you get stuck behind a Sainsbury's lorry...

There weren't any roadworks last thursday when I was on the A339 last.
