Well nobody else is going mention it, but it's well worth a thread of it's own and I hope a back page splash for a change on NWN... (before the cricket season starts in earnest)

Our town's rugby club, after many years of an uncomfortable slide into oblivion have at last managed to survive a season without slipping down into the league below. Four relegations in a trot have put an incredible strain on the club's finances and on it's reputation as a place to send your kids on a Sunday to pick up the skills to become a rugby player of the future....(Tom Croft started rugby here y'know..... well if you believe the papers...)

If Newbury had slipped further down then it is doubtful whether the club could realistically survive in it's present location...

Yesterday, in front of a large (in relative terms) and vocal crowd they beat Salisbury 27-12 and so ended up 9th in the league!!! (South West One East)

A lot has changed since those heady days when Newbury competed against the likes of Northampton Saints at Franklin Gardens (and nearly beat them - was it really only December 2007?) A long drought of sponsorship money and a visit from the Tax Gestapo saw key figures at the club being put up against the wall and shot for overseeing a club in decline and it's been a real struggle for all at the club ever since...

But the team this year in particular has been made up of Newbury boys... and I think that does make a difference. A good proportion of them have come through the system all the way from Minis rugby... At least 8 of yesterday's players have been at Newbury and wearing a Newbury shirt to represent their town since UNDER 6!!! Continuously at the same club from toddler to adult without playing for another team, that is quite some achievement....

Hopefully Newbury have found their level and can at least now consolidate and build. Not looking far ahead, just looking to build a community rugby club. That's good for the town.

A town of Newbury's size should be punching well above where we are currently for our football team and our rugby team. With a bit of luck the Sandleford development will actually become a residential development before long and the rugby club can rebuild as parents from that area bring their toddlers along to chase an oval ball and become senior rugby players of the future ..

Well done Newbury, it was a great match to watch and great atmosphere. Huzzah!!

If he started in mini-rugby it was probably before he got to Park House.

This is all great news and great for so many reasons. The players have demonstrated how to stand up and be counted.

It is now time to stand up to the incompetence of the top management of the club. For too long everyone else has been blamed and they continue to blunder on blindly. If this was any other business they would be out. How much more needs to happen before we act?

A change is needed.

In so many sport/volunteer organisations the committee that runs things is little more than a collection of the few who stand for election. Plus so few who are eligible bother to vote.
A bit like local Councils, really.....

Your post would be better directed at the club, though, as I doubt many on here have any influence at The Estate Agents Luncheon Club
