Inspired by the discussion on councillor attendance, and the usefulness or otherwise of that as a measure of the councillors' effectiveness or whatever, I thought about how we could score their attendances to take account not just of absences, but to consider the number of committees the councillors serve on, and the number of times they substitute for absent councillors. So in the same way that diving is scored as a product of the difficulty and execution, I've ranked the NTC councillors against their scores for currently published minuted meetings. Difficulty is a measure of how many committees the councillors sit on, the more committees the more dedicated the councillor, and so the higher the difficulty mark. Execution is a measure of the absence rate but it also includes a contribution when the councillor substitutes for another absent councillor at a meeting. CODE councillor attended absent attendance substitute difficulty execution score Jo Day 16 1 94% 1 1.39 0.90 1.25 David Allen* 17 2 89% 0 1.50 0.83 1.24 David Fenn 10 0 100% 4 1.02 1.18 1.20 Dave Goff* 12 1 92% 4 1.13 1.06 1.20 Adrian Edwards* 14 2 88% 1 1.35 0.86 1.16 Mukesh Bansal 9 0 100% 3 1.02 1.13 1.16 Kim Hodges 14 3 82% 1 1.39 0.82 1.14 Howard Bairstow* 14 3 82% 0 1.43 0.78 1.11 Ieuan Tuck* 9 1 90% 3 1.06 1.04 1.10 Arthur Johnson 10 1 91% 2 1.13 0.96 1.09 Anthony Pick 12 1 92% 0 1.28 0.85 1.08 Kuldip Singh Kang 12 2 86% 0 1.32 0.80 1.05 Phil Barnett 12 3 80% 0 1.35 0.76 1.03 Tony Stretton 13 6 68% 0 1.50 0.68 1.02 Elizabeth O’Keeffe 11 4 73% 0 1.35 0.71 0.96 Julian Swift-Hook* 12 7 63% 0 1.50 0.64 0.96 Catherine Kent 5 2 71% 3 0.95 1.00 0.95 Jeff Beck* 10 6 63% 1 1.35 0.68 0.92 Eva Franks 6 0 100% 0 1.02 0.90 0.92 Gabrielle McGarvey 6 3 67% 2 1.06 0.82 0.87 Richard Kingsley Evans 5 1 83% 0 1.02 0.78 0.80 Martha Vickers 5 3 63% 0 1.09 0.64 0.70 Liz Salter 3 1 75% 0 0.95 0.73 0.69 *also a WBC councillor Just a bit of fun, nothing serious.

Just a bit of fun, nothing serious. Just as well, because your table does not format properly and is therefore difficult to understand.

Individual councillor attendances are interesting enough, but what's more insightful is to see the general trend. This shows that 80%-90% attendance is typical, but that over a third of councillors miss one in four meetings. What's particularly unimpressive is that two of the bottom three are the leader of the council and mayor, and that can't help but impact on the effectiveness of the council as a whole.

Sorry Brewmaster, can you tell me what's happening as it looks fine for me. It's just space-separated and it's in a code block so as far as I'm aware that shouldn't wrap and should be rendered by your prowser in a fixed-width font. Can you say what browser you're using?

This doesn't work properly on older version of Internet explorer but works fine under newer versions and chrome

I'm using Firefox 8.0 and when I posted my comment your table appeared unformatted. Now I have logged on again and it looks fine, with a scroll bar down the right-hand side. Sorry for spreading alarm and despondency!

QUOTE (Andy Capp @ Dec 14 2011, 07:48 PM) Perhaps it is about time Drummond and Swift-Hook upped their game! Sat on a cushy number it seems. Or are they spreading themselves a bit thin? I think I remember Drummond was unwell, but that was a while ago. Nothing about Left-Hook. I agree the aggregate of the stats (esp when compared with others) is worthy of an explanation. I may drop them a line.

I think it's a bit harsh on Left-Hook. He's doing well on the Sandleford campaign. What's more strange about this is that Northcroft councillor Tony Vickers is also providing free professional planning advice. Especially as the northern half of his ward abuts the alternative to the Sandleford site, I would have thought these people should be serving their own nimbies before helping out on the other side of town.

Jeeez we're in more trouble than I thought. This is the man who claimed he wasn't aware that Aldi's first planning application had a time limit after it had run out. Well, I suppose he's have to give free advice, because I doubt if anyone would pay him for it.
