Running Windows 7 at present and have avoided 8 as I did not like the look of it when I have seen it over other's shoulders.

I am now being pestered every time I boot up to install Windows 10 allegedly for free (not sure what happened to 9!).

Has anyone installed it?

If so any comments would be appreciated. What are the improvements over 7 / 8? What are the drawbacks, if any? etc.

Thanks.

One major drawback, for me as a techy, is the inability to control updates. You get NO choice.
There is a start button, as per 7, but that irritating metro screen is there too. I install classicshell, which is open source and will enable a windows 7 look to the start menu.
The reason you are getting nagged for 10 is update KB3035583 has been applied. After installation, GWX.exe will be running. The wise old owls in MS have put it in IMPORTANT update list, as opposed to OPTIONAL.
Personally, I will avoid 10 like the plague, but that is just me.

I'm on 7 - and was getting the update reminder regularly. They kindly include a check feature to test if your PC can run W10 - which told be my laptop was fine apart from the wifi hardware (no driver). Naturally I thought this would result in the end of nagging. It didn't - MS evidently think a laptop without wifi is fine!

So I disabled the nag.

I upgraded my HP laptop to Windows 10 from Windows 8 and now it doesn't sleep or hibernate.

I am running Vista 32bit as our main OS, mainly due as that was what came loaded on PC, but Win7 due for release within a couple of weeks so we got sent a Win7 upgrade dvd from HP for free upon release.

I set up a couple of extra hard drive partitions and used that Win7 dvd to do a clean install of Win7 then updated it to Win10, had a few problems which meant deleting the partition and then starting over again, then I after the third set of problems with an upgrade to win10, I decided to use the Windows10 media creation tool and download the windows10 ISO from Microsoft which creates a bootable DVD or USB, I then did a clean install of Window10 64bit (I was offered Win10 Pro) when I ran the installation dvd, NOT had any problems with it since.

Now got a triple boot system, of Windows Vista (which I prefer), with the option of booting either Windows10 or Ubuntu.

I do look at the Microsoft UK facebook page, everyday and although the issue of support is a bit dodgy with MS I was able to rectify an issue I had with product activation.

This is one of my ongoing disputes with ms, they update the os but you need an IT wizard to install it and run it. Microsoft! Oi! Do your own debugging before you release the product.

If you intend to go to 10 or its subsequent flavour, then you may as well get it while it is free to install. If you do, read closely the options on install; don't just blindly say yes to everything.

I prefer 10 over 8.1. 10 is kind of what 8.x should have been, rather like 7 was what Vista should have been.

Thanks for the replies.

Going by the general consensus I think I will stick with 7 for the time being.

Can someone tell me how (in layman's terms please!) to disable the constant Windows 10 free install reminder

Biker asked for advice on a specific task, not what you think is best.
Trying Linux is not an option for many, they just want to use their system, not experiment.

I've down loaded Windows 10 on all my computers and I like it. Better than Windows Vista, 7 & 8. They were all downloaded free. But I believe it is a limited time.

Well I just done my daily check-in on the Microsoft UK facebook page, being the sadist that I am and after a short scroll down the "other users" posts somebody from Newbury has commented on how brilliant Win10 is! wink.gif

July some time.

Good luck with your windows 10 updates over which you will have no control, even a bad ones which MAY balls your pooter up. The same will happen as has with MS foisting upgrade to 10, you will get all sorts of $hite.
They didn't declare it as an OS upgrade, rather an 'important update'!

In addition, there is a great deal more usage tracking in 10 that phones home. Check it out, and good luck with that!

That sounds like a Microsoft sales pitch the same as their constant upgrade messages.
