My missus has a car (I don’t need one, but I am insured to drive it) and I have a license.

Does anyone know the cause of the recent Barns Green incident? I have not heard of an automated crossing ever failing but that is not to say it hasn't though I am always very careful when using one, just in case.

It is an Automatic Half Barrier (AHBC) similar to the now defunct Ufton Crossing.
They are fail-safe, (that is regards to operation) but do not allow for vehicle misuse.
You will not encounter any in the surrounding Newbury District anymore with the removal of Ufton.
Not sure where the nearest one to us is now.
The use of level crossings is simple.
If there are amber or red flashing lights DO NOT CROSS!!
Always wait until the previous vehicle has left the crossing before proceeding onto it.
Ensure you have enough momentum to clear the crossing should your engine fail.
Despite the all the above, if you do stall on a AHBC PHONE THE SIGNALLER before making any further attempts to move the vehicle.
If the sirens sound and the barriers fall you have a matter of seconds as demonstrated here. Get out quick and get clear, phone the signaller if you can (although it is probably too late), get clear and await the impending smash!!
With regard to the Barns Green incident, although the result of the investigation has not been published, I would be almost certain that it was caused by misuse of the crossing by the driver of the car.

Thank you for the clarification. We have all witnessed the "last car through" just making it before the barrier descends.

If, if you can show me how he did it I would be grateful. I can't see how it might be done. Or perhaps I should ask him?

Well bus replacement day 1. Paid for the 08:30, left Newbury station at 08:55. I had an option for a cup of coffee free of charge.

No mention on TV about the bus replacement service which I find amazingly neglegent of the TV news people.

The bus goes the M4 route which is risky.

Well bus replacement is OK, on time every day back from Reading, journey time just under an hour. Comfy seat to myself.

Trains today. Stood up in a crowded carriage due to a cancellation; duff points allegedly.

Might prefer the bus.

Of course there will the threat of traffic from time to time, but having a comfy seat to yourself is a big bonus.

Probably diesel fumes, it's like when you stem in some at the pumps, hangs around for ever. Nasty smell I agree.

Err, no, but there wasn’t much space for anything.

Based on the premise that if not may passengers are transported on that particular run then they can axe it as not "being fully utilised".

Buy a car, preferably a dirty great big diesel, and contribute to the planet's demise. You know it makes sense. cool.gif
