We have loads of smart motorways where I live and I travel on them all the time. Nothing Smart about them, they are a complete waste of time and money and are just as congested as they were before. Safety wise, if there is a breakdown they just close that lane and it happens almost immediately so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

The idea of smart motorway is to increase traffic flow by adding another lane.
But people can't drive in 3 lanes correctly, let alone 4...... like you say it ends up just as bad as it was before.

I agree, even the back roads in France are better than most A roads here. Still driving that golf??

No I got rid of it.

Been building this for the last 4 years :

CT-2094-(ZF-6182-13377-1-001)-1 by Fat Bear Photography, on Flickr

Got 395hp from a 2.0 TDI

Now it's in a million pieces on my drive with no dashboard, doors or wings . rolleyes.gif

We went to the Nurburgring in April.
What an experience that was.

There was one pothole which was about 4 inches deep and about 2ft long, about 1ft wide, on a road very near to my house

If you hit it at 30mph it would literally sound like a bomb has gone off.
The road is a 40 limit.
It was also in the direct natural wheel path..

I agree generally round here the roads are not awful but they are not good either

A recent trip to Europe showed how much nicer the roads in France, Belgium, and Germany were.

If they repaired the road properly for let's say £50 / yard rather which lasted 10 years, rather than £30 / yard which lasts 2 years....

All good fun I suppose!!

As expensive as always.
Pushing for 400hp, I barely drive it now as I have a little Ford now as well, and as I work from home I tend not to go out for weeks at a time.... cool.gif laugh.gif

So they want to cut across the road to allow vehicles to turn right, when heading south, towards the train station and back into town.

Newbury Town Council are institutionally complaint-averse. Their complaint-handling process is 1. fob you off, 2. complain that you're complaining, 3. victimise you for complaining. They are incapable of accepting that they can ever be in error and are pugnacious in their suppression of criticism.

Can anyone confirm if the reception is particularly patchy around here? Took my new Range Rover back to the dealers last week to have the radio and antenna in the back checked out. They say there's nothing wrong but I'm not so sure, anyone else having problems as they drive round West Berkshire? I've checked the website to see if any transmitters are down but nothings showing. Anyone?

That's a true first world problem.

I have a Fiesta and the DAB works fine on that. Can pick up KISSTORY and Radio 1X without issue. But I use Spotify most of the time.

Did anyone see and recognise a low flying military aircraft flying over Newbury/Woolton Hill today (Tuesday). It circled round at least three times. The first time it was very low indeed.

Any ideas where it took off from, where it was going to, and why it was so low?

can you not trace the flightpath on FlightRadar or similar apps....

Brave you. We need pioneers such as you to Beta test this technology for us all. Personally, the idea of paying £65k on a car is ridiculous. Especially when you are in effect carrying a blast bomb in the boot with 5kg of hydrogen stored in a tank at a pressure of 10,000psi. Still, if it wasn't for the likes of you we'd still be riding round on horses.

Or like carrying around battery acid.

Hydrogen cars are the answer.

Battery powered car are a pathetic, poor, short-term workaround.

I can totally see where Newres is coming from.
I think many of us have taken our eyes off the road to check something in the Glovebox/radio/phone at some point.
Those who vehemently deny that they have are probably the worst offenders... !

The guy did not set out to kill people I'm sure.
However as a "professional" driver he should have ensured his attention was on the road.
Certainly had a car ploughed into the back of the traffic jam dare I say the family may still be together today.

While there is absolutely zero excuses for the lorryist's actions we can understand we may have all been there before.
That being said the video shows him paying next to no attention for upwards of 45 seconds and for me I may glance at the stereo while messing with the music rather than stare at it...

Ummm, yes , but I'm sure you'd moan if everyone from another planet decided to turn up on your doorstep and dump their crap.

I just don't see the problem.
If you live in Reading using the Reading tip.
If you live in Newbury use the newbury one!

I do not know, and do not care, for intricate details, but as an overall scheme, restricting you to tipping in your most local tip, I see no issue with that.

Regarding the tip and passes. Don't see the big deal.

Would you want waste from other large towns being disposed of in your local tip, given those large towns have their own tip?

It's not an awful idea. However as I found out recently you don't need a pass, driving license is fine as long as you live within the right areas.

You can't just upgrade the A34 to be a motorway.
Legally there has to be decent routes around the country which aren't motorways for idiots who have 50cc mopeds or still travel by carrier pony.

It would be better to be upgraded to 3 lanes (like the A3 is) but that doesn't stop the issue of poor lane behaviour (lane hogging), people who do not accelerate in a timely manner to join the motorway or who pull out without regard for faster traffic causing them to slam on their brakes at the last minute.

I don't think reducing speed limit will help.

People will still do 70/80.

It needs enforced HGV traffic restricted to inside lane along certain stretches. Some sliproads should be extended (bollocks there is plenty of space to do so).

And what's more people need to get off their ruddy phones / sat navs and actually use their eyes.
