Took a Focus for its MOT last Monday to a place I have used for a number of years. It’s had a temperamental bonnet lock for some time, but it does work. Had not been to the bonnet lock of the car since the MOT. Went to check the oil, etc. to find that the bonnet has now a very shallow depression in it above the lock and a 2” crack in the paint work. Too late to make a fuss about it now, but I wont be going there again for tyres, exhausts or MOT!

It still operated. Gowrings and Fiddler had no problems when they serviced it. Still doesn't justify damage without any comment!

That is fair enough, but I would have pointed out the issue when dropping it off, especially if I knew the trick to free it.

Poster doesn't seem to have confirmed name of offending "garage", but as someone suggested, well worth going back round there & asking for comment/ agree action.

Gowrings a good price MOT if you book online through here:

.You don’t have to say any more! Exactly the repose I got when I went back in there yesterday. Basically ‘tough’. I was annoyed that the car was damaged while they had it but what really annoyed me was the fact that they must have known what had happened but had kept quiet about it.

Somehow, that website doesn't look like a Gowrings site other than the address. I suspect this is a concession rather than a main dealer. Not a risk as the MoT is controlled by the DVSA, (Used to be Vosa) and they set the standards and licence the testers and test stations. This should mean that wherever you go, you get the same test. Dents are optional however.

If the test station cannot open the bonnet, they should refuse to test. If the bonnet will not close correctly, that is an Mot failure and the garage should not use force to close it.

Strange that the poster checked his oil after rather than before the MoT. Bit of a risk if it's a diesel.

And perhaps, if it is a dodgy lock, it is easier to spot a dent after an MOT than before! wink.gif tongue.gif

It was checked before it went, that is how I new the bonnet would open!

No. The paint work is 'cracked' which it certainly wasn't before.

That is a bit odd, are you sure the bonnet hasn't been repaired in the past. It is very rare for modern paintwork to crack. Perhaps it is filler after an accident repair under the paint that has cracked, could that be why the bonnet catch is a bit dodgy which meant the tester had to push a bit harder. Assuming he does 5 Mot's a day, that means he closes upwards of 25 bonnets a week so he would become quite adept at the process. Shame it all went wrong on your Ford. Mind you, after seeing the result of a bonnet catch failing, I always make sure mine is 100%.

RON,
as they've blown you out of the water, we'd appreciate you naming ~& shaming.
May be worth you reporting your experience too, to the overseeing agency, identified on another post.

I think it is unfair to do such a thing unless the 'victim' can prove the problem was caused by the garage. An owner with a known fault is showing a certain amount of negligence himself.

If the above named garages have serviced the vehicle then why didnt you get one of them to complete the MOT as the both can.
