Bartholomew St is a mess at the moment already with the traffic lights at Craven Rd.

Wasn't the Broadway just done????

I was just going to post exactly the same myself. It is a truly a nighmare getting up or down Bartholomew Street at the moment with the gas works and yes I know they are essential but work to the Market Place !!!!! How much did they spend on the Market Place and yet they are having to carry out more works there !!!

Remedial works are to take place in Market Place, Mansion House Street, Bartholomew Street and Northbrook Street alongside other works to the enhancement schemes at the Broadway and Cheap Street.

Basically the whole of the town centre will again grind to a halt...... Last night the queues actually met themselves all the way round Bartholomew Street, Mansion House Street, Cheap Street and Market Street..... It was great..!!

I think the sensible thing to do is to forget Newbury and visit elsewhere......Even if you have to travel a few miles it must be worth it as Newbury has definitely lost it altogether angry.gif

Not a lot of good when you live near the town centre and have to go through it to get to work.

"Spokesman for West Berkshire Council, Phil Spray, said: "Not all of the areas were done recently and maintenance would be expected to be required in Bartholomew Street and Mansion House Street which have seen a significant amount of work by utility companies in recent years."

OK, so why is the money coming from the council and not the utility companies who have caused the problems?

Exactly they should make it as good after the job as it was before....

On one thread there are complaints about the state of the roads in West Berkshire.
On another there are complaints about the work necessary when they are repaired!
Travelling around I find that Newbury is not unique and most towns have their traffic / parking problems - some even worse!
Anyway, weren't we told back in the nineties that the by-pass was going to solve all our traffic worries? laugh.gif

It's not that these roads are being repaired because they have worn out, but because of poor repairs by utility companies following work they have done.

The money is having to come out of the normal repair budget that could be better used to repair roads that have worn out. Not only that, but the pointless use of bricks where tarmac is perfectly suitable means repairs cost more, take longer and don't last as long.

This is the reason why the majority roads are in poor shape.
Even the bad weather in the Winter usually does its damage by finding these poor repairs where water/frost gets in.

One of the points I was trying to make was Newbury is not unique. This is a nationwide problem.
Are all those who advocate defection saying that Reading, Basingstoke, Andover are free of these problems?
Traffic congestion is inherent if many towns in Britain and in my experience a great deal worse in some.

You think Newbury is bad - visit Guildford! WBC does have some issues, unlike the aforementioned town our road foundations are on swampy marsh - not solid chalk! And as for the utilities - presumably we all still want gas, water, electricity, drainage and telephones. They are supposed to restore to Council standards. We also have a large rural road network where residents expect town standards for rural rates - a difficult one to challenge.
