Not Newbury related and not even a rant but I've posted here regardless... Sad news (Is it really?) tonight is that Michael Winner has kicked the bucket.

Stand by for reruns of 'Charles Bronson shoots nearly everybody just to make sure, Part III.'

Brilliant news. What a tool, now he's dead. I think maybe in the 70's he probably had a bit of a following, but I only know him for being a judgemental, petulant, egotistical and pretentious fool.

I am just confused by the outpourings of sympathy for celebrities who die. Not just this annoying advert man but for most celebrities in general.
I don't know you. You don't know me. No offense but I do not care that you are dead.

Whether you make a "contribution" or not is irrelevant, at the end of the day everything boils down to money, you think actors act for the kids?
There are people, caring people, who sacrifice a lot for their friends, family, or even complete strangers, who die every day. It is they who deserve the sympathy and mourning.

Always had a soft spot for Hannibal Brooks, but that wasn't the usual Winner fare.

In later life he said that he always took his own jar of caviar with him as the stuff he got served in some of the restaurants he visited was often 'too salty'. (really?...I wonder why that would be Michael?)

Famous people and celebrities form a part of our past and history; a part of a surrogate family as it were. It is only natural to treat some celebrities death as sad or mournful. I certainty see it as rude and disrespectful to take the opportunity to slag off famous people just because of some people's possible misguided sentiment to wards them. To paraphrase motormad: is it really that much of an issue to get that excited over! If false bereavement is the worst thing people do, then I welcome more people to do it!

Perhaps sometimes it is better not to say anything if one cannot say something nice about someone!

If the 450 had come forward when he was alive and could account for his actions, it would have been better than speaking up after his death.

He advocated upholding the law, and would have , if he could, have come down harder on what a lot on here complain about, so he was a voice for us too. He founded the Police Memorial Trust. He was a self made man, he had to be after his mother gambled away his inheritance. Just look at his biography on WIKI to find out more.

To my mind, he deserves a positive eulogy.
