Dear Forum members,

It is the holy month of Ramadan, where Muslims around the world fast from dawn to dusk. All2gether - West Berkshire Minority Ethnic Forum with the support of the local Muslim community groups, has organised a small event in the local Mosque, 33 Pound Street, Newbury, RG14 6AE.

This is All2gether's annual Community Iftar (breaking of fast) event, inviting you to come share a meal and find out what Ramadan is all about. This is an inter-faith/inter-community event taking place on Friday 18th July at 8:00pm.

All2gether hopes you can join the local Muslim community in building bridges, and sharing and understanding one another.

Please email Waheeda Soomro, Community Project Manager, All2gether via waheeda@all2gether.org.uk if you would like to attend (a small contribution of £3.00 towards the cost of the food would be warmly welcomed).

NB: All adults are please requested to observe the appropriate dress code when attending the Mosque.

Yours sincerely

Ruwan

A bit early, surely, as sunset is 9.12pm?

Some obvious answers to this one, but I don't want to upset any of our shrinking violets. laugh.gif

I'm guessing that this advice would be pretty much fine.

I can't / wont be attending for many reasons but one question I would to ask about Ramadan and fasting is, what if you are observing the tradition and you live above the Arctic Circle?
Just wondered??

The same as one would wear within church etc, albeit shoes are removed and women are asked to wear a head scarf.

Biker1 ,

Excellent question.

I have it on good authority that in such situations a follower of the faith would adopt the time of the nearest Islamic country or Mecca itself.

NWNREADER,

The precise time is calculated by a group of scholarly Imans elsewhere so the time does not exactly match sunset in a given location.

I do appreciate the motive for the open time Ruwan.
I am of little faith.
I do like places of spirituality though. I find that a moment at say Smithfield refreshes the soul.
I am not trying to be complicated about religions.

It just makes you think what people have gone through to be free.

You could say that JeffG.
Both my children were born nearby the burning posts.
It is still a place for reflection.

Well, if you went along and I missed you I'm sorry about that, but I had a really enjoyable evening. I have to say it was pretty much exactly what I expected - a bunch of really nice decent people who have something of a different background to my own - but I was made to feel very welcome and it was a privilege to have been invited.

The Iftar event saw people from across the globe with differing faiths and beliefs come together to 'break fast' with the Muslim communities that use The Bangladeshi Welfare Centre as their Mosque.

People left the Mosque having been informed about Islam and Ramadan specifically with their stomachs full having shared wonderful Lebonese cuisine.

I am always inspired after such events as they demonstrate that we share far more than we realise and that it is easier to get on with each other than not.

Great for the menfolk. Not so great for the women.

I have no spiritual belief other than doing what is right. I am not particularly interested in what other people believe. When I read or hear the news these days, religious fighting and turmoil is going on all over the world. Ruwan and Simon, you may believe that we share far more than we realise. I don't and having breakfast wouldn't do it for me.

I am more than happy to live with local Muslims but I do not want to share their faith neither do I want them to have to share our common faith.

I note that Simon is already making noises towards his potential acceptance into the Liberal party. Great, if you can't beat 'em join 'em.

Bit pointless calling it sunset then.
