I woke up this morning to Heart radio about 7.30 (it's my favourite smile.gif and heard that They (the people in white suits with black sunglasses) are thinking of building a 5 star hotel next to where the Texaco petrol station is near Park Way. I think the location is going to be that boarded up car garage.

Did anyone hear this, this morning?

I don't think it was a dream some how haha.

Also, they will have to do very well at building it to make it a 5 star hotel and you can't say you're going to build a 5 star hotel anyway because you get people (people in black suits with white sunglasses) to tick the boxes to say... "Yes! This is a 5 star Hotel! Congratulations" ...after the build.

Anyways, love to hear your thoughts on this.

This is going to be on the corner of park way, where the hand car wash is, suppose to be about 60+ amount of rooms & only 12 parking spaces. 'that boarded up car garage' is where Aldi may be going.

I think it is a stupid idea that will probably get approved by West Berkshire Council saying that we need more hotel's!

Who on earth wants an Aldi... i have never seen, heard or entered one in my life. We have enough supermarkets around here, don't forget we are now having a 3rd Tesco store (thats including the Metro).

I can't see how a 5 star hotel is going to go there to be honest, but its like the Cinema... none of us knew it was going to fit.. and it has.

That's all the argument against it I need. wink.gif

Of course there are those who on principle or through financial reasons cannot/will not use the other big 3. LIDL seem to do pretty well and they have roughly the same market in mind.

As for the hotel, a small, luxury boutique hotel will suit the town very well. Not everyone wants to stay in a Hilton, a Travelodge or a ropey pub-***-doss house.

The hotel is to be a Travelodge.

Since most of us on here, I suspect, will never need to stay in a Newbury hotel, perhaps we're not exactly the right audience to ask as to whether there is already enough of them?

Are you so dismissive of all new experiences?

Good point, other than conference facilities (which I doubt Travelodge have) how many regulars here would have every used a hotel in Newbury?

I have. But when you're 19 and have no other place to go with your G/F, you don't have a lot of choices... smile.gif

Sounds like a cheap and cheerful like a Travelodge would be right up your, er, alley for that sort of thing!

A travel inn would be much nicer, with a lovely beefeater next to it.

However I wouldnt want to stay on that street with all those boy racers and their noisey exhausts!!

It was the Chequers, back when it was a classy hotel. Remember, Mrs T use to stay there. Not at the same time thankfully.

I suppose i could say yes to it, but if its a cheap store then i guess we can now call Newbury... Birmingham?

laugh.gif laugh.gif Nope, i agree.

Another thing to add, why build a 5 star hotel next to where they want to build a cheap supermarket? hmm

I know a developer who looked at this site as a pre-app a couple of years ago and the planning department said (without prejudice of course) nothing over three storeys would be permitted - so will they change their mind I wonder ? !
The design looks modern but I am worried it will be built cheap and nasty.
