That probably is a fair statement xjay. It seemed a good alternative at the time 25 years ago.
Brothers,friends,and others were off across France then. Nightmare journeys with crying kids.
"When are we going to get there?" We did it once to Brittany.

There is an alternative. We said. So we/I do own a home in the middle of nowhere.
That is much used by my now grown up kids. I think they want to buy it from me
because I was thinking of offloading it. I have been told that they want me to talk about it

We did have to pay for it, restore it ,the electric company wouldn't reconnect as it was unsafe
so our first night was spent with a gas storm lantern.

I reckon the money spent on builders to fix it up could have built a starter home.
What the heck going through customs or roadside checks as you have just mentioned has to be the pits.
