I do hope everyone came out of this accident okay - BUT why oh why did the powers that be not keep Northbrook Street open?????

I had to go all the way to Marsh Benham and back through Enborne in order to get into Newbury. Alternative to Hambridge Road and round that way but the Robin Hood was just stood still !!!!

It would have made little difference what with the bridge being traffic light controlled etc.
It would have just gridlocked the town centre.

It would have relieved a lot of the traffic if they had opened it for a diversion this morning.

Would it though? Northbrook street has at least 2 sets of lights whichever way you come through, plus the fact you have the shopping centres and stores and pedestrians. Angry business men in their BMW's late for work... ? Built up area...?

No, it is not.

If you don't believe me, read the traffic order; it is a restricted street

Exactly.

And it would have required an additional Police presence to man the diversion and temporary over-ride of the traffic order.

Where are the calls for a speed limit so residents of neighbouring roads are not suffocated by the fumes of rat-running vehicles? With the recent fatalities, the length between the Robin Hood and Police Station 'roundabouts'must be the most dangerous in West Berkshire......

Apples and oranges baby doll; during the hours of this crash it's a pedestrianised zone. Sorry I was not as exact as you wanted and I hope you feel less insignificant about yourself after pointing that out.

Not a good idea to be building a couple of thousand new houses in the area without thinking very carefully about the roads infrastructure is it?

What a shambles. A police block on the Robin Hood with an arrow pointing towards the London Road. No diversion signs anywhere and no way to go south. I thought that they may have had a policeman on the wharf bridge to direct traffic over but no help there. All the policemen seemed to be standing around on the Robin Hood. The A4 eastbound was stationary. Like the poster above, I ended up going via Marsh Benham to get to the southern end of town. I can't believe how badly this fairly minor accident was handled. I know there were two big lorries involved but at least one of them looked driveable but three hours. Talk about bigging it up.

The serious side of this though is what if that had been major with loss of life and the road closed for perhaps the day. We are without any way over the Kennet now apart from the Hambridge Road/Kings Road route. I believe the council may have some questions to answer about how to cope with that type of scenario and what they should put in place, in conjunction perhaps with the police, who showed a complete lack of effort today to resolve the traffic problems.

Police see that as not being their responsibility it strikes me; has been for some years.
I always notice the Gards in Ireland do get involved in traffic snarl ups.

At Xmas many of major junctions there have police stationed there at Christmas
to make traffic "hurry up" and not dawdle at the lights.

On the M/Ways, Primary (Trunk Routes) Highway Agency seem to take the lead.

Diversions are the responsibility of the Highway Authority (WBC). The norm id for the police to request the council to set up and sign a route. I guess the problem is there isn't one.......

Staffing a diversion route with police officers would probably have used all those on duty for an area greater than West Berkshire, although there was talk of resource sharing with Hampshire as I remember....

If there were to be a debrief of the incident management I wonder what the outcome might be on the 'where do we put the traffic?' section....

Most TROs have a specified exception for emergency service vehicles on duty.

WBC will probably be playing the song "Things can only get better" after today, until someone mentions that we are going to have oodles of new houses being built.... is this true someones asks..... No No No Yes oh B*gger!

I do believe another bridge over the Kennet has been requested just a few times now - but hey ho WBC know best as usual. Sings the song "Alway's look on the bright side of life" rolleyes.gif

You're suggesting the existing limit should be increased by 10mph?
