Odd to be upset by that when there's massive alcohol consumption with drunkeness and associated violence at Newbury races?

Buying alcohol is good for the local economy, getting cocaine from some east end pusher does not help the balance sheet.

East end? Charlie is easier to get than a Dominoes pizza these days. And they deliver. So I have heard.

I will accept your obvious knowledge on such matters, but am somewhat concerned that you also use pizza delivery services. Slippery slope old chap. cool.gif

Well first up it's the daily mail so take it with a line of salt

Secondly I it is just as destructive as alcohol, and gives a similar heightened feeling of confidence and agitation

and thirdly it destroys communities where it is farmed and processed so it should not be shrugged off.

Can't see the issue. Aren't the political big thinkers trying to legalise the sale and use of recreational drugs? There was a campaign just a few months back trying to get supplies to a young boy whose chronic medical condition could be alleviated if he could access such drugs. We've managed for years with the consequences of people misusing alcohol after all said and done.

We have enough zombie types occupying our council chambers without more roaming around the town. Still a lot of people say that Newbury could do with some spicing up! rolleyes.gif

The resulting social problems are not though.

Not wholly convinced about that, ironically the drug problems are more manifest so easier to identify and where necessary mitigate. The effects of living or working with an alcoholic is very often harrowing, physically painful, and dragged out over an extended period. My view is that what apples to one drug which is known to adversly affect behaviours should be applied to all.

Drug addiction is just that irrespective of what substance is being ingested. Never could get my head around the idea that in order to feel like I do, (nothing stronger than green tea), others have to spend their pocket money on an artificial stimulant and make out it somehow improves their lot.

From the Guardian:
"The possibility that the use of illegal drugs, and cocaine in particular, might be fuelling recent outbreaks of violence at racecourses is also being addressed. In the aftermath of the disturbances over the last two weekends, anecdotal evidence on social media and internet forums has suggested that cocaine use is increasing at some tracks, with long queues for the mens’ toilets highlighted as evidence of the problem.

“We always assess the challenges of each raceday on a case-by-case basis,” Julian Thick, Newbury’s chief executive, said this week, “and give thorough consideration to any additional factors in the build-up to each raceday. As is the case across all our major fixtures, we will have sniffer dogs, drug amnesty bins and bag searches in operation across all our entrances on Saturday and an increased number of security staff wearing high-visibility clothing throughout the site.”

On the second point , we bow to your obvious knowledge.

Again, can't see the real connection between physical use and violent order. I suspect that funny business has been going on in the Gents for decades. The violence, as usual, is doubtless overspill gang warfare. And doubtless some gangs might be supplying drugs. If it wasn't drugs it would be something else.

I think this supports the case, even though they have more than enough dogs today, this problem apparently still exists! Or....dare I say....is the press story fake news?

It’s certainly “no **** Sherlock” news. I doubt there’s any large gathering in which there isn’t a lot of drug use. In general the social problems arising from non alcoholic drugs only exist because they are illegal. If people want to snort cocaine, let them. As long as they aren’t driving or running machinery or whatever.
