Cllr Betts is in the news again - proud to be standing in the way of GWR's planned electrification. It seems the he (ie Purley parish council) have managed to get a railway bridge listed at Grade II - preventing GWR from demolishing it (for now). http://www.purleyonthames.net/news.php?news_id=87

Not that it will stop GWR - Cllr Betts should recall that it is West Berkshire Council that gave permission for the demolition of 6 or 7 listed buildings to make way for a local shopping centre. What chance of this listing preventing a nationally important rail link being upgraded?

Meanwhile I guess that there are many similar bridges over the railway lines in West Berkshire - should these be listed too?

Still its nice to know that one West Berks councillor actually gives a d**n about our local heritage.

Just looked at it on Bing maps 'birds eye view' and cannot see anything special about it. Standard 2-span brick bridge. Hardly in the same league as say, Maidenhead bridge.

Sorry to be pedantic but for the sake of accuracy it is Network Rail who wish to demolish the bridge to modernise the line
The GWR ceased to exist in 1947!

I agree that some things get somewhat out of proportion when you compare a the survival of a minor bridge with the important development of this vital transport link.

It may well have been built during the construction of the line under the auspices of Brunel but as you say, many important constructions such as the bridge over the Thames at Maidenhead and Box Tunnel will remain long after the modernisation of the line.

Oooooooh, who took the jam out of your doughnut?!

Sorry Biker1 couldn't resist that. Believe me, now that I know what this thread is about I shall definitely avoid looking at it. But, I bet all the women who post on this site will do the same once they realise what it is about.

Orrrrrr, we could all get together, hijack the bridge and take it over causing a much more interesting thread. Uuuuuummmm interesting thought. wink.gif

You're joking, right? What were these 6 or 7 listed buildings?

No, I was not joking. Check out the planning documentation if you want full details.

The obvious ones to go are 35 and 36 Northbook St, 34 has gone apart from the facade. Ebenezer Cottage (the old scuba shop) is no more.

In the picture the listed buildings that have been demolished are in pink.

I should also point out that Cllr Betts is all in favour of Parkway - which is, of course, not in his back yard.

the cottage would have been good, incorporated as a cafe, but Architects can't cope with anything by someone else despoiling their master plan.
the other buildings are no great loss.
