"Well we had a meeting of t'committee and passed resolution", as in the immortal words of the late Colin Crompton, and that is as far as it goes. It does not require an astrophysicist to see the problem anymore than the requirement of millions of taxpayers money to address.
We can no longer expect to bomb along major trunk roads at high speed just because our modern car is designed for that purpose.

Perhaps when we leave EU ,foreign HGV's will have to pay to
travel UK's highways.

The proceeds could go towards improvements, as clearly needed here.

I reckon there will be enough inflation without idiotic ideas like that.

So you don't want foreign lorries to contribute to the upkeep of the roads that they use? Strange - presume you expect it to be funded by te UK taxpayer instead then.

Think it through. If we charge, they will charge. Inflationary. Goods will go up in price already.

It's about making the hauliers pay an even rate rather than filling up with Diesel outside the UK rather than pay UK fuel duty, which is the highest in Europe, and therefore contributing to the Wear & Tear on the roads rather than get us to pay for them via other forms of taxation.

No safety review or "safety improvements" will make any difference as long as the standard of driving on the roads continues to deteriorate and not policed.
The only aspect of enforcement is speeding, which is easier to police. All other driving offences are generally ignored by a dwindling police force.
The standard of driving on our roads only amazes me that there are not more crashes.

Total agreement. I assume, rightly or wrongly, you ride a motorbike and therefore must have seen your life pass in front of you more times than the proverbial feline. Even if we did have more traffic officers it is doubtful they would have much impact as it is the average drivers mindset that needs addressing. Makes one wonder what the point of the driving examination is as the highway code is either not known or completely ignored. Ton and half of propelled iron in the hands of an imbecile. rolleyes.gif

They already do. Carnets for certain countries, toll roads in others.

All charging would do is level the playing field a little.

Nonsense.

Yay! Speed restrictions! That'll stop Polish truck drivers from staring into their phone!
