A NWN web poll asks “Do social net working sites harm society?”
So far 34% said yes, 50% said no and 16% said we’ll see.
On the whole no, but there is a moron element in society that will take it to extreme; like anything they come into contact with. We must teach kids that there is a real world at there, beside cyberspace. Computers are the future and with the real world kids must be taught their strengths and limitations in socialising.
What do you see as the computers strengths and limits? Do you agree with the poll’s results (so far)? What attracts you to the computer?

Of course they don't harm society.
I would suggest that a Catholic Archbishop has bigger things to worry about than Facebook.

The funny thing is that the Catholics and other denominations are using such things as facebook and my space to promote their religion.

Social netting is harming society as we knew it, but what is happening is a new society is forming.

Well..... yes. New replacing old is just the evolution of society. Is that really harming society? Man has got to learn to adapt to new changes and never look back. Maybe that is why we have death... as man gets older he tries to clutch onto the old. If he was allowed to succeed we would be constantly moving one step forward, two back.

Although, unintentional, I think 'Social Netting' is an emerging term or slang.

Speaking as an older web user I must say the computer has opened up a whole new world. A world that is so "small" that I can discuss the ashes debacle with a man from Perth in real time. My family members are only a click away from an instant get together.
I appreciate that the younger generation are maybe missing out on the one to one contact that we "enjoyed" but if the groups of youths that congregate on the street corners are anything to go by then it is not entirely dead.
Modernity is an evolutionary consequence. Remember the Luddites , their contribution to history is the appellation,not the doctrine.

Good point; it wasn’t that long ago that if you wrote a letter to, say Australia, it could take over week. Now you can send photos or write and it will get to your target within seconds. You can also have a face to face discussion over the internet instantly.

No they don't harm society, if anything they bring people together as lotdtup has demonstrated.
Remember though, they are just a communication tool and if there is a problem with any aspect of their use then one should blame the message, not the messenger.
