Does anyone know what those double wheel detector cables are that have been strung out over many roads locally last week?

I assume they are there to check the speed of passing traffic but does anyone know who they are set by and what the data is used for?

i THOUGHT they were some sort of 'counter' so they can ***** the volume of traffic using particular roads ??

As for who sets them up, again i THOUGHT the council ?

They can then determine if any action is needed on the roads ..... ie traffic lights

But maybe i just thought too much and i am completely wrong dry.gif

I've always thought that too, that they're for counting the volume rather than measuring speed.

I would have thought they'd be too close together for the latter.

I just though seeing as there are 2 sensors that they calculate the speed between the two.

I would have thought just one would have been sufficient for a counter.

I always thought 1 was for counting and 2 were for speed measurements. As Biker 1 said you don't need two wires as a counter.

Perhaps one's for a backup, I'm just guessing though. You'd hate to leave it there and find that it had broken on the first day giving you no data. Having an extra wire must also be cheaper than someone driving round every day checking they're still working?

Even at 30mph the area needed to judge someone's speed is 10 metres long or so, I would have thought these wires would be too close to judge speed reliably, again just a guess.

It will be for traffic surveys. Two pneumatic loops allow for speed calculations as well as simple counting functions. ( actually not that simple - the data is quite comprehensive )

Counters using piezoelectric to count the number of axles using a stretch of road.

I imagine they're in pairs so that they can work out the type of traffic (wheelbase, number of axles), since usually most parts of the same vehicle move at the same speed smile.gif

Also, with 2, you can tell traffic flows as they get triggered at differet times.
