Reading todays NWN (yes I can even read too), I see that Northbrook Street will be getting yet another "restaurant"...

As a developer has lodged a "change of use application" for the unit that is currently a Robert Dyas shop.

Ah well, I suppose that will help to mitigate the high number of daily deaths of those who die of hunger or malnutrition whilst walking in Northbrook Street!

Best Wishes to all.,

The article does say that Robert Dyas is giving up that shop, but they didn't confirm or deny whether they are going to different premises. Hopefully they are just moving to a larger building (or smaller one).

Speaking to the manager today, from what he told me the first he knew of it was the story in the paper. He was pretty adament that the store is "not" closing, so I just hope that they might be moving to a new unit. Although sadly I have say I can remember the managers of HMV saying much the same thing, even when it was apparent that the decision had already been made. I think it is a sad indictment of large businesses today that they are happy to keep loyal staff in the dark. sad.gif

Sadly, when you have share/stake holders, they are obliged to not be any more candid than is necessary. sad.gif

Do you think the application should be refused? Consumer choice is a bad thing?

If there is sufficient demand the business will succeed. That's market forces.

Would people prefer another empty shop? (There are over 40 in central Newbury already).

Or perhaps there should be a Council-enforced State quota of restaurants? Serving National Dinners Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 4?

It is the coffee houses and restaurants that are keeping the High Streets alive. Shops are increasingly becoming redundant.

Another one opening soon in the Market Place too, in the old Carter Jonas premises.

The town's changing, but at least someone will be paying rent and keeping our EU 'compatriots' off the dole.

Redundant shops should be converted to - in some cases, returned to, housing.

The world is changing. We are no longer a nation of shopkeepers.

It's already happening - just hasn't happened much in the town centre yet.
