"Stand ye calm and resolute,
Like a forest close and mute,
With folded arms and looks which are
Weapons of unvanquished war.
And if then the tyrants dare,
Let them ride among you there;
Slash, and stab, and maim and hew;
What they like, that let them do.
With folded arms and steady eyes,
And little fear, and less surprise,
Look upon them as they slay,
Till their rage has died away:
Then they will return with shame,
To the place from which they came,
And the blood thus shed will speak
In hot blushes on their cheek:
Rise, like lions after slumber
In unvanquishable number!
Shake your chains to earth like dew
Which in sleep had fallen on you:
Ye are many—they are few!"
Shelley

Not sure what to make of that!
Is it a call to arms to overthrow the government "rise like lions" or a pacifist saying you can kill us all and we will just take it? 😮

It's neither TDH. Shelley wrote this after the Peterloo massacre and it supports non-violent resistence to injustice.

Certainly there is a subtlety to nonviolent civil disobedience, but the alternatives are either to accept tyrrany or take up arms, and I have the deepest admiration for people brave enough to take a stand without adopting violence - it's always the tyrants that get bronze statues in the high street while the martyrs get forgotten, but the justice and dignity of their protest can't be ignored.

Interesting how we "adopt" a piece of literature to fit our present environment. No one can argue for the heavy-handed response to what was basically a voicing for a political change in a time that pen and paper were still the preserve of the privileged, but as the reform act ( 1832) was not presented for a further 13 years and not implemented till 1867 one needs to question the wisdom of putting one's life in jeopardy for the sake of a principal . Unfortunately, we do not know how much of the demonstration was orchestrated by outside influence or just a part of society who were at the bottom of the heap.
The Masque of Anarchy was not published for another 30 years so very doubtful that any of those who suffered in Manchester ever got to hear the work. Shelley himself was ostracised for being an atheist as opposed to a mouthpiece for the masses.
To be fair to Corbyn he is not the first politician to use other's works to hammer home their point of view, but I very much doubt he would stand at the front of his supporters if a sabre waving cavalry approached with malice intent.

Our armed forces are used for disaster relief and anti drug, anti slavery, anti people smuggling and anti pirate operations as well. Helping the poorest and the most vulnerable around the world.
Idealism meets reality.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth a war, is much worse. When a people are used as mere human instruments for firing cannon or thrusting bayonets, in the service and for the selfish purposes of a master, such war degrades a people. A war to protect other human beings against tyrannical injustice; a war to give victory to their own ideas of right and good, and which is their own war, carried on for an honest purpose by their free choice, — is often the means of their regeneration. A man who has nothing which he is willing to fight for, nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. As long as justice and injustice have not terminated their ever-renewing fight for ascendancy in the affairs of mankind, human beings must be willing, when need is, to do battle for the one against the other.”
― John Stuart Mill, Principles of Political Economy

Posted by: SirWilliam Jun 26 2017, 10:48 AM

Violence is a very base response to something we object too. It is an intrinsic trait in all animals to fight when faced with an adversary that poses a threat to our lives or those close to us. The debate centres around should we stand against the tyrant or allow them free reign to impose upon our lives? Do we take up arms and fight in the knowledge that the outcome may not be in our favour or accept our lot?

The real problem is the rise of those who would do us harm. Nationalism breeds a collective voice that feeds upon our fears which in turn throws up leaders that exploit the rhetoric. J C, ( the present one ) may well have pacifist views but this does not mean he is weak as a leader, but neither does it send a positive message to those that would do us harm.

With a global population explosion, the pressure on maintaining the peace is a precarious balancing act and only history will show at what point in time the wrong decision was made.

Yes, fear of violent response didn't ever worry Ghandi, and on his past record, like it or not Corbyn is certainly no coward when push comes to shove. One thing I do hope je suis, is that your Tory friends and colleagues don't resort to physical force just because they start to lose.

Which is why he resorted to flinging the racist jibe around. The last resort of the inept and morally bankrupt is to simply call everyone you disagree with either racist or Nazi. laugh.gif

Surely the whole point of any forum is either to argue your cause or disagree with the views of others. Once it degenerates into personal attacks, ( however justified ), the impetus is lost.
Only a complete bigot would consider himself to hold views beyond question or be man enough to accept that the other party may just be right.

Not many politicians signing up to this philosophy.

In an ideal world that might be true, but I think a lot of forums and social networking sites are full of egotist with not much to share other than ignorance or bigotry and these people seek out like minded people to help support their views. If true the chances of a meaningful debate are small.

Irony. The expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect.
Or, A state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often wryly amusing as a result.

To which 'type' were you alluding to?

One wouldn't expect someone who complains about someone else being a certain way, is themselves a model example of that they complain of.

I would not know about other forums and know even less about the social media thingy that seems to rule the lives of so many.
Even the President of the most powerful country, ( supposedly ), on earth seems to consider that social media is a more adept means of relaying his message than actually standing in front of an audience.

What is very apparent is that the written word can not only be miss-construed but actually miss-read in order to fit the reader's criteria. Perhaps we should just revert to talking face to face? huh.gif

Britain’s wealth problem – we don’t create enough of it
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-40506570

As even the BBC have woken up and spotted the reason why, under its present regime, we are well and truly stuffed. In effect, what's been happening since 1979 has reached its logical conclusion.

So, it may well be that those threatening to go have done the decent thing and actually done so. Meaning we still have a chance to clear up the mess once the next election is out of the way.

How old was he at the time? 2004 wasn't it? He looks like a child now! It's Jared isn't it?

And how is wanting to have sex with someone hate? Perhaps that's how it works for you.

Well you’d call me a liberal, but I’m not terribly PC I’m afraid. Even so, I’d hate to be judged now for some of the things I did and said in my 40s, much less my 20s. It’s a bit desperate and compared to Boris Johnson he is a saint.

If he was a "swivel eyed loon" the knives would be out by now though. And at a time when looking at someone 'in a funny way' is considered hate crime by the left it hardly matters if he was 'only' in his twenties does it. Most of the Hitler youth were younger than that, wouldn't say they were all innocent would you? Different standards for different political parties.

Posted by: SirWilliam Oct 24 2017, 05:41 PM

Saint or sinner dependant on one's own political leaning seems to summarise the debacle . We all change our views as we age but those who spout personal vitriol at any time in their pathetic lives should be precluded from a position of public service . The worrying aspect is that element of the electorate that supports such rhetoric .

"A source close to Labour’s national executive committee said O’Mara’s selection in Sheffield had been backed by the local Momentum group, after the 2015 candidate Oliver Coppard did not stand again.

Tweets from the Momentum Sheffield account from the election campaign call on volunteers to campaign for O’Mara, calling him “the pro-Corbyn candidate”.

Figures!

"She said, however, that O’Mara had later abused her – before he became an MP – when she encountered him while out with friends. Asked what O’Mara said, she replied: “Obviously, some of the things aren’t broadcastable. There were some transphobic slurs in there. He called me an ugly *****.”

Hmm.

"Fresh allegations emerged after a string of offensive comments he made in blog posts made online emerged.
In one he asked Girls Aloud to have an orgy with him, attacked 'fatties' and said it would be funny if Jamie Cullum was 'sodomised with his own piano' in posts exposed yesterday."

Nasty!

"And he told another woman he was chatting with online: 'Don't worry luv, I'll lay on your rack any day.'

Oh you little scamp!

"You can’t blame the Labour Party for letting one of their members, Jared O’Mara, slip through the system and become an MP, even though he made comments online calling gay people “fudgepackers” and women at a club “sexy little slags”.

Go Labour! Be inclusive!

Not scientific, of course, very little is. However, the preponderance of the evidence would tend to swing any rational person not totally mired in his or her lefty defensive position to conclude that sadly these are some of the people labour see fit to field as peoples representatives in parliament.

I must admit that "Poppy Day" seems to have been hijacked by the commercial moguls . Like Easter eggs and christmas tree decorated , their appearance gets earlier year on year . I wear my poppy on the day and that's it , but not to wear one on some missguided impression that it somehow glorifies our involvement in armed conflict is a little short sighted . No one , apart from the odd Millwall FC supporter , wants to go to war but are forced into the position by bad people in charge , ( sounds like Trump , I apologise ), who wish to impress their power by any means .
Buy your poppy and wear it ,not so much in pride, more a recognition of the futility of war and it's victims .

I don’t believe the author of the premise you refer to (Fisk: the poppy is racist) could legitimately claim to speak for the left. Children on this forum believe me to be ‘left’; however, I usually wear a poppy, so it is not entirely true.

The poppy is and should be a mark of respect for the fallen, for the blood spilt and young lives lost in defense of our country, to mark the blood soaked butchers bill that comes with sacrifice. Not some token of a tawdry attempt by silly and thoughtless fools to turn it to political advantage. And the poppies should always be red, as were the flowers that bloomed at Flanders.

Poppy wearing is by its nature a political force, but not all military actions taken by a professional volunteer force is something some are proud of.

Laying down your life for a fellow human being is an honourable thing, but soldiers are not the only casualty in war or military conflict.

I wear a poppy lest I forget, not for any other reason.

And I have no problem at all with people wearing a poppy. It's just for me it would symbolise a support for Blair's wars as the modern charities have adopted the poppy as a symbol (it seems to me).

I honestly have never heard it suggested that the poppy is a symbol of racism or fascism, but personally I'm uncomfortable with it being used by Britain First as a political football.

Do you lot spend your whole lives looking for things to be angry about?

And I have no problem at all with people wearing a poppy. It's just for me it would symbolise a support for Blair's wars as the modern charities have adopted the poppy as a symbol (it seems to me).

I honestly have never heard it suggested that the poppy is a symbol of racism or fascism, but personally I'm uncomfortable with it being used by Britain First as a political football.

Do you lot spend your whole lives looking for things to be angry about?

In agreement , ( bit of a collectors item wink.gif ) ; but remember our armed forces did not go into Iraq because they wanted to , they got sent by our democratically elected government . No one thinks it a good idea in hindsight , indeed it was a very bad idea , but wars are very seldom started by the people who fight them so to those who fell in any conflict we should salute their memory .

Labour want to sully and despoil all concepts of loyalty to Britain, honour and service. To them, anything British is bad.

Wearing a poppy and the associated Festival of Remembrance and Remembrance Sunday do not support any war.
The clue is in the word "remembrance"!

Who are "you lot"?
This is a forum of views and debate is a substantial part of that.
Some of the views of others will ignite some form of anger. Especially when covering subjects such as war and disrespect for the casualties of war.

I think more and more people are starting to see the folly in military ventures. It is one thing to respond to a direct threat, but another to know we voted for people to endorse a campaign that has killed hundreds of thousands of poor people.

And there I was thinking he had been in touch with the almighty . Blair was/is an egomaniac who is far more interested in having his name hewn into tablets of granite for posterity than doing something positive for the wretches who bought him to power .
Bush on the other hand was just thick .

Just to add. I no longer wear one. I used to before the recent wars and attend the ceremony but I won’t now as I see it now as a symbol of support of our recent wars. I’d be tempted to wear a white one but instead I just won’t wear one anymore. Nothing to do with it being a fascist symbol but it’s a shame right wing groups have begun to appropriate it.

I have no doubt you would be a conscientious objector if we had a conventional war again.

Is that important ? Every time a Labour government is elected we end up in a financial mess ; each time we vote Conservative the underprivileged feel the effect . Like the eponymous pig cycle no single political party has the ability to break away from the system. Rather like the Planet's orbit of the Sun ,it is the way things are . I have sympathy with both groups but by the same token both parties are responsible for the mess and only be uniting as a common voice will it improve .

The whole point of the poppy is in my opinion and I know others think differently is that it's tied intimately to Remembrance day. To remember the nations dead, who (in general) went to fight in defense of our country. So that we could enjoy the freedoms enjoyed by you and I, Iraq and Afghanistan were to some extent politically inspired conflicts which we were never going to win. That said, people still died, they didn't choose to go, they were sent. As a soldier to don't get to pick and choose were you go or who you fight, that's always a political decision and to try to twist that to gain some pitiful little political advantage is in my view incredibly distasteful.

No doubt you will disagree and come back with some clever little comeback but that's up to you really.

The problem starts when wearing one becomes a social obligation which is fine if it were a symbol of respect for soldiers who were volunteers and conscripted to defend against impending tyranny, but less agreeable when its to pay tribute to people who signed up willingly in the knowledge they may be shot at or bombed one day, made worse when it was to prosecute a war on a very questionable legal basis.

I will still pay tribute to those that did and still support the poppy, but I am beginning to question whether I should continue to do so. Vietnam’s conclusion was hastened I feel due to public resentment and there was a draft for that.

"everyone else on here" "without the intelligence" Please elaborate.
Actually when you "pop by" the debate often lessens and regularly resorts to insult.
When someone posts something that you disagree with try and counteract with debate to make your point as to why you disagree.

But it's just a few agitators. It doesn't signify anything more than me posting a link to BNP rallies or Britain First. It's meaningless so the only thing left to draw a conclusion from is what the poster reads.

Not the same at all, it's something on the increase, where thugs (all masked) invade peaceful meetings with the sole aim of disruption. It's hilarious that the so called anti fascist movement are so **** bent on acting exactly like fascists.

Like many others today I do not subscribe to nor buy any daily paper. I get the news I need from various news feeds, all of which provides a wide range of news and opinions. The only paper I used to get was the Sunday sport? Used to enjoy finding out about all the B52 bombers and London buses on the moon. I hear Elvis is up there as well now! laugh.gif

It's a tough call, no-one expected the brexit vote to go the way it did and she's been handed a poison chalice and, succeed or fail she will always be remembered for brexit. All parties are ridden by infighting and power grabs, just look at Labour. Personally? I would like to see a bit more Churchillian statesmanship with a touch of Maggie's waspishness thrown in. It would be the man who has been on the right side of history on every foreign policy vote. Iraq, South Africa, Syria, Afghanistan and so on. Quick google search and a figure of $2.4 trillion is shown to have been donated to Africa in aid since the 1960's. Now for that sort of outlay I could pipe running water to every mud hut on the continent. We all know where most of it has ended up and now it looks as though South Africa is going to join the ranks of other ex colonial countries in the belief that starvation is the result of nasty white imperialists as opposed to their own ineptitude in food production. angry.gif

Quite. But you just know Ewan McGregor, Bono and co are going to be appearing on a tv screen soon begging for aid for S Africa.. I have no issue with places like Syria and Yemen receiving aid where war has been visited on the general populous often through no fault of there own. I don't have as much sympathy with agriculturally rich countries with no wars and a racist policy.

Jeremy Corbyn Is a Moral Rot Consuming Labour From the Inside. He Must Be Destroyed

By Louis McEvoy
"As has been clear for over a year now, Jeremy Corbyn is not a decent man. Jeremy Corbyn is a nasty, morally questionable and dishonest narcissist with a third-rate mind; a man who stands against so much of what the Labour Party ought to exist for. In an era where capitalism has triumphed, identity politics is often the only successful repository of leftist thought, and old-school social democracy can amount to little more than a quaint anachronism supporting the illusion of political choice, it’s hardly a surprise that such a mean-spirited and meaningless faux-leftist ideology has successfully filled the vacated space of left-wing philosophy. It’s the Parliamentary Labour Party’s equivalent of the vile backbench Tory Right. What makes this so much worse is that, well, the Tories would never allow someone like Andrea Leadsom to become Prime Minister. Labour threw up their own Leadsom in order to have a broad debate last year - and this Leadsom won. It’s hilarious for the first few seconds, before you realise the implications this has for the welfare state, the NHS, basic standards of living...just take your pick, really. But the Corbyn problem is not purely one of electoral impotence, even as Owen Smith (pragmatically, rightly) presents it as such. There can be a real malice to Corbyn, as a popular political phenomenon - in terms of both belief and practice."

Could someone define a "left wing government"? Those who purport to be working on behalf of the proletariat invariably are using the populist support to prop up their particular agenda, which is at odds with what the masses actually want but having been subjected to the "other" side of politics for generations are more than happy to embrace the new order so they can put one over on the past masters. The only real left wing government we have experienced was the Attlee regime after the war and history has shown that was not the utopia promised.

Let's face it politics stink whichever flag they sit under.

So by this measure, 51% of those who voted are racist? Really? Please tell me more Mr Mitty.

I trust you are not implying that every brexiteer is therefore a racist? I doubt if many of the hardline bigots could find their way to a polling station let alone manage to place a X in the box of their choosing.

Actually, no I'm not. Every racist is a Brexiteer, but not every Brexiteer is a racist.

Actually quite easy, get the most intelligent to follow someone and drop copies of the mail along the route. Sorted!

Leave newres alone. He's a leader of industry. He has a lot of stars of david to print.... I wonder if he retweets holocaust denials like that nice labour councillor? I'd guess he is an Arsenal supporter as well. Those Tottingham boyos wont be his cup of tea.😂

Depends how you define it. If I lived in Pakistan I’d consider the Americans to be the terrorists. If I lived in the West Bank I’d consider the Israelis to be the terrorists. Don’t get me wrong, I consider the attacks here horrific but for everything there’s a context.

The irony is that in Syria we attack the government, but if Assad falls yet another country will be overrun by fundamentalists. And we attack the Russians for attacking the terrorists. Life would be simpler and safer if we just left the **** alone. And that’s only gonna happen if JC becomes PM. Win, win eh?

As someone who voted for Brexit I find it highly amusing that you’re concerned about the next generation. Corbyn could **** things up for 4 or 5 years, Brexit will cause damage for generations.

What will be interesting is when we start negotiating trade deals during withdrawal. And they are worse than what we have now.
