I think it's simply a case of ageing infrastructure and the need to provide new power stations to replace those being decommissioned.

Well lets have clause 4 back. It was Reading Labour Party who moved the successful motion to nationalise power and railways at the conference before the 1945 election. No reason why they couldn't do it again!

I know. Dredge around in any party barrel and there is still life at the bottom!

The strange thing about nationalisation is that it was Tory governments that started, the 1930s versions - BBC, Central Electricity Board, London Transport, and Imperial Airways. Labour in the shape of Herbert Morrison was much more keen on the municipal model - which was really started by the Chamberlains (Lib / Tory)

Andy, what prompted this? Were you thinking about the latest development claimed by our transatlantic cousins - who are telling us they can feed very high voltage pulses into local area networks which will 'pop' every electronic bit of kit connected to it. Thus disabling communications etc. at a stroke?

If you pass thorugh any retail centre, in any town or retail park, you will see a humungous waste of power with lights blazing 24/7. If shops were compelled to cut down on power usage, much needed resorce would be saved.

The three day week, back in the 70's forced the government to take drastic action to save energy. Why the h.e.l.l isn't something similiar put into action now? It doesn't have to be so harsh, but surely, waste should be made socially unacceptable.

Don't just sit there and accept what 'the rules' say. Rules are never written in stone.

Cameras can work without visible light, if anyone enters THEN put the lights on!!

Simples, and common sense. We have technology, for crying out loud use it.
