It rarely goes to anyone with an actual personality, just to whoever has achieved the most in that year.

Therefore my gold, silver and bronze would be Andy Murray, Bradley Wiggins and Mo Farrah.

This year, of all the years ALL of the candidates will be worthy of the cheap BBC tin vase....

However at least we can be assured that the contribution from overpaid footballers will be marginal....

For me Wiggo should be a shoe-in as he actually has a 'personality' which has been rather a lacking quality in some of the previous years candidates.. Ryan Giggs anyone? Alright, Jonny Wilkinson then.... No? How about Nick Faldo?
A lot of his success in the Tour however is also down to the fantastic effort his team put in to get him there, but he wasn't just handed it on a plate. An Olympic Gold just a few weeks later was the icing on the cake.. Maybe cycling's detractors will moan that he still could be a drug cheat (?!) which may place other worthy candidates higher up the list...

For a 'left-field' candidate how about Ali Brownlee? He's a pure quality triathlete and after a wee swim and bike he slowed down and high fived the crowd and was still only 90 seconds slower than Mo on the road! However he's in a minority sport so the BBC won't consider it....

Taking all things into consideration it would seem somewhat unfair to single out an individual when so many achieved so much.

But someone has to win and I am sure they will be worthy of the honour .

The good thing this year is that there are numerous candidates who are at the top of their sport and who have personality.
I hope the award goes to someone who is not already highly paid for their achievement, and who has done something special to make their sport more attractive to the multitude. I will not object if he wins, not in the slightest, but Mr Murray has yet to show he fits some of my criteria.

I await Simon telling me how wrong and unjustified I am.

Is that a metaphor?

No prizes for guessing Team of the Year. I wonder how they'll fit them all in the studio though?

Personality in this instance is used in place of the word "celebrity".

This year,

Team GB, both Olympic and Paralympic.

Are there rules that say an individual 'has' to be honoured?

Bradley should win, just the sideburns alone make him a main contender

I think the word 'Personality' gives it away. (the clue is in the title - it's singular).

They do have an award for Team of the Year though.

Of course, the BBC also have been known to ignore people who have been given most votes (if they're not well known enough) and just give the award to someone everybody's heard of regardless of exactly how few votes they got. (See Bob Nudd - the man who received most votes ever - but who many of us had never even heard of)
