Better still, completely close the A34 and make it a double track.

This topic keeps appearing every few years but the reopening of the DNandS will not happen unless it takes an entirely different route because there are now housing estates, trading estates, and major roads built on the old trackbed alignment.

As the drifts of litter on both sides of the dual carriageway in town get deeper by the day I wonder what message West Berkshire Council is trying to send to those arriving in our fair town.

Could it be that they want them to be impressed by the fact that they aren't spending taxpayer's money on trivial matters like clearing up litter?

Perhaps they're being brutally honest 'This is a pretty sh*t town, get used to it'

Or maybe the thinking is that any publicity is good publicity?

Is it a tourist attraction, arranged by our very own tourism officer? (Who knew we had one of those?! Great that we can afford one and a much better use of council tax payer money than cleaning our streets.)

The A339 isn't the only area of impressive litter build up but most of those visiting or passing through Newbury must drive along it and have a chance to marvel at the council's wisdom and foresight. Well done!

They are paying for a service that they are not getting or it got cut in the budget cuts.

I have a feeling you'll still be able to catch a bus at the railway station.

Only if you work for Vodafone at the moment I believe.

What when they are moving the bus station even further away.

There is still a roundabout next to the clock tower they could use.

But its only a mini roundabout now and some people would find it difficult to do a 180 there

Two options -

1). sell the land to the highest bider & have no real say in what is built on it.

2). enter into an agreement with a developer & contribute the land for free & to get a far greater say in what gets built.

Surely WBC can still have a say in the plans as they have to approve them, vis Sterling towers still not getting planning permission or is there something very fishy going on vis Parkway and Victoria Park

They made the 'mistake' of putting the plans for the pavilion in the public arena, I suspect they won't be doing that again too soon. Bloody constituents!

Is this why so much is done behind closed doors because they are so out of touch with the electorate they dont want another debacle similar to what happened over the pigeon loft. And I don't think that has fully gone away yet

I would perhaps have said it was ok if the bus station was included in the scheme somewhere near the Railway station and we got some revenue from any parking fees. But that wont happen will it

NTC have been trying to kill the market for years and nearly managed it when the resurfaced the market place with the so called cafe/bistro area to save having a vastly empty pedestrian area that can not be used for parking any more as its in a pedestrian area but does the Charter market only makes a loss on the say so of the been counters at NTC in that any administrator can put so many hours allegedly to charter market work when they are not necessarily doing charter market work

Response time for a high speed train to 'dip' the pantograph?

If it was going that fast it would not be able to stop at Newbury. I think it is more to do with the Voltages involved and clearances of the roofs of the trains and the overhead wires

QUOTE (Richard Garvie @ Mar 4 2013, 09:35 AM) *
Let's talk about issues in Victoria ward since I got involved in local politics.

CCTV
Pavilion
Skate Park
Play area / fence
Cracks
Speeding buses
Vandalism of Victoria Park kiosk
Faraday Road development / threat to football ground
Threat of a bus lane on the A4
Rats along the canal / back of Poundstretcher
Reduction is staff at railway station
Affordable housing at the racecourse and a proposed reduction of number of affordable homes
Delays to the new roundabout on Hambridge Road, first raised by me last year, later recycled by Lib Dems
Lack of security and police cover around the industrial areas
Safety along footpath of canal
Phasing of traffic lights at Robin Hod and Sainsbury lights
Lack of road improvements to accommodate Parkway traffic
Removal of public use of Bayer car park at weekends

I'm sure there are many more, and I have the press cuttings and audio recordings of the coverage my efforts secured for those issues. If the byelection result was based on hard work and representing the community in that ward, is there many people who would be chosen ahead of me?

My main campaign pitch (if selected by the party) will be that I want greater transparency at the town council, starting with full disclosure of the cause of the parkway cracks issue so residents and businesses in the ward can finally claim on their insurance and receive compensation from whoever was responsible.

Secondly, I would be lobbying for a reduction in the annual turnover of the council. At a time when people are choosing between eating or heating, is it right that we spend this much money on a parish council with very limited powers?

There are many other issues that are important in that ward right now, and whoever the Labour Party candidates may be will fight this election with real passion about doing things differently and injecting fresh, young blood into local politics.

It would be helpful to know if the cctv is up and running as should be
the Pavilion is dead and buried
Final closure as to the cracks in Victoria Park
I was not aware of a problem with the speed of the buses
Reduction of staff at railway station is First Great Western/Network rail not NTC
Security and policing is a TVP /PC thing again not NTC
Traffic light phasing is a problem though out the town centre area not just the Robin Hood Sainsbury area
Lack of improvements not just Parkway and a bridge for buses and taxis only, but also the banning of lorries in Mill Lane

I saw his video on the Newbury and Thatcham Facebook page. What struck me was how little has changed, the empty buildings are still empty, there's not that many shoppers and there's scaffolding up. I wondered if my impression of Newbury once being a great town with loads going was a bit rose tinted? I wonder if age has something to do,with it, or if the video was shot on a bad day?

Wont let me open the link

So why will the High Street fail, but not Retail Parks? High Streets have a nicer environment (if you like crazy paving), no traffic, lots of pubs and restaurants, buses passing nearby and so on. What have retail parks got that the high street hasn't?

Free Parking

See this: http://goo.gl/Af3rj Has to be good news for Newbury. I particularly
like the idea of moving the bus station further from the rail station: provides healthy exercise for all those people who have been sitting around/standing in trains for ages.

for some reason my Yahoo wont let me visit that site, but to move the bus station even further from the railway is in my opinion a retrograde step even if its back to the Wharf with its consequential loss of parking. It now makes even less sense to lose the couple of parking places to make Park Way bridge 2 way. But then again we are talking WBC.

With a residents association they would at least live in the area and also have an interest in the area. With Parish and town councils you would probably live near if not in the area so also have an interest in the area. But with the District council they don't have to live in the area, so do not nescasarily have a vested interest in the area, so if the make a bad choice they do not sufer the consequences as much as everybody else. Paying parking fees do not mean the the car park will be maintained or that all the revenue earned will be used to maintain the car park.

This is just another ill conceived plan of WBC Who have little or no concern for the general public at large. WBC since its inception has been trying to make Newbury car free and to kill of the original town's centre hence no shops except bistro's pub's or charity shops around the market square so its almost dead during the daytime. Also how many parking spaces were lost when the parking in the Market Place was lost in making the market a cafe culture haven, and then how long did it take to issue permits for it to be used as such.

Its a far better and more pleasant environment. Perhaps there are a few who think that a pleasant wander round the shops, followed by a coffee can be achieved at the Retail Park, if so, good luck to them. Simple though they may be, Newbury town more than satisfies my needs, even for heavy electrical appliances at John Lewis and Iceland. I can certainly think of better things to do than sit and wait on the link road for the traffic to clear and then put up with trying to find a free 'free' parking space!

I thought Iceland stopped selling white goods several years ago before they got rid of there rear tills
