This is not a rant , more an incandescent meltdown . All through the EU referendum the Europhiles cited animal welfare as one of the "positives" of membership . Bloody well looks like it . We have known for a long time that the Europeans have a more cavalier attitude to suffering than the Brits but reassured that legislation was in place to minimise the effects of modern farming .
I appreciate that these incidents tend to involve transport from the East of the area as opposed to UK but that is immaterial to the animal concerned . Incidentally it is almost certain that any animal that perishes in transit will end up on someone's plate , ( read tourist) , as it is apparent there is little in place to prevent it .
If nothing else , Brexit will , ( hopefully ) , stop the export of livestock for the food market . Politicians of both sides of the divide were responsible for the closure of local abattoirs 20 odd years ago ,so even in this Country animals may be 2 or 3 hours in transit before joining the production line of a "modern" slaughterhouse .

Pity no one from EU is on this forum as they could put pen to paper and justify their Countries position . angry.gif

Stop eating so much meat would be a start.

Have you ever stopped to think how much meat is produced for the pet trade ? Every dog , cat , reptile, fish, etc eats meat . It is estimated that the UK pet population is around 54 million and apart from the odd stick insect they are all omnivorous .
Now if you choose to be vegetarian then that's fine but to impose such a diet on Fido is as inhumane as the process we are discussing .

As far as this topic being aired before , I make no apologies for raising it again . Some things are far to important to overlook as visited before . angry.gif

I never suggested impossing anything, but my statement remains. I believe the next great animal welfare debate will be pets; we have too many.

Pet ownership , especially dogs , seems to be the in thing at the moment . I accept Aunty Flo having a scottie for companionship , I half get the mindset of the local skinhead who thinks his street credibility will be enhanced by having a set of teeth on four legs in the shape of a staffordshire bull terrier but I can't understand Mr and Mrs 2.4 family who leave the howling mutt shut up all day while they swan off to work and wonder why the house has been destroyed when they return.
Like the housing market these things are not cheap to buy and financially crippling to maintain but still puppy farms churn them out unabated . HM Government's response ? No I don't know either . angry.gif
