I see there is a report that JD Wetherspoons want to demolish the quaint little cottage behind the Hatchet.

When were they demolished?
To have something very old amongst all the new is a wonderful thing to see. It gives us a visual reminder of what the town used to be like before the bulldozers took hold. There is nothing worse than modernism for modernism's sake. If it was not worth keeping, then the council would not hold fire on any decision. It is 18th century, surely that speaks volumes.

Sorry Strafin, I have to disagree with the 'bulldoze it'. Heritage is very important.

Do you think they could demolish the old post office building at the same time? An eyesore of a structure which really (imho) spoils Newbury!

I thought it was a shame when they demolished that little old pub (Rising Sun?) near where KFC is now.

Now if you mean the concrete block that used to be the telephone exchange then I agree with you.
It would seem that there is not enough commercial interest in developing this site otherwise it would have gone long ago. I believe that it is de-commissioned?
The next major developement in newbury should include the demolition of this building.

Nope - it's still the telephone exchange. Although with the reduced size of modern equipment compared with when it opened in 1974 much of the space inside is unused.

To demolish it would mean providing another one somewhere at great cost.

(It ain't cheap to move all those cables!)

I think we'd all agree the exchange is an eyesore though. The worst building in Newbury I'd say. Out of kilter with the rest of the town.

I think this has been agreed many times before in various surveys and I side with you.

Unfortunately the cost of moving it to enable it to be demolished is prohibitive.

I cannot foresee anyone stumping up the cost to enable this to happen.

(I should imagine there is a very nice view of the little cottage at the back of the Hatchet from it though! )

Unsure, but if you look at the wall in the car park you can still see where they were. This isn't the only one in the area. There are several in Queens hotel car park and one in Drewet & Neate car park. Just because something is old it is not necessarily beautiful or worth keeping (except me of course). There have been recent calls to preserve buildings on Sterling Estate.
