"When making its decision, the council noted that the conservation officer had no objections to East Street, but did not make reference to her concerns about Marsh Lane."

Like WBC's Chief Exec, Nick Carter, once said (not verbatim): 'you won't recognise Newbury by the time we've finished with it!'

Would be better if they changed colour when they were stepped on. That would be a good game.

Howdy,

It is because of the past that we can see the future in a better light.

Seems strange that the local historian doesn't seem to object to the electric streetlight right outside the building.

I'm hoping it turns out something like this.

We, was he asked? Mind you, according to reports, the Muppets of Market St even overlooked one of their own when it came for approval.

That would be a question for the newspaper. They did the interview.

Just seems to be a bit strange, objecting to one form of electric light but not another.

but you don't know that he does though? However, it wasn't the street lamp that was up for approval.

However, I find it even more strange that the council even ignored their own officer's advice.

Mind you, should I really be surprised after all that has gone on in the Parkway development.

Do you think that perhaps more than one officer might have been consulted?

Why not read the documents for yourself?

It seems that the officer's comment was valuable enough to promote the installation at one end, but not the other. That is 'strange', or perhaps it explains a bias in the council's report.

Or perhaps the NWN made it up.

Yes strange indeed! I thought they would object to the proposal as they usually like to keep us in the dark don't they? rolleyes.gif

Still we always knew that Parkway would get what they wanted.......when SLI say jump the only question the council may ask is how High? wink.gif

I think you might be making things up now.

There's little change of getting a sensible debate on here these days.

I do have to say that is the impression, that I am getting too.

It seems that Standard Life and David Wilson Homes, have a very good thing going on with our beloved council.

As they only need to ask and our elected officials seemingly fall over themselves to oblige.

Makes me wonder just who has got a hand up who?

But hey that is just my own personal opinion and one that I am happy to say publicly too.

Unlike our council who hides behind its cloak of secrecy, those councillors should be ashamed of themselves, unfortunately some of them revel in it!

I can't see how the grade II listed Jack O'Newbury's house is compromised by solar pavement lighting. The lighting isn't incongruous or jarring, it's just modern - you might as well argue that walking past the building in modern dress is objectionable and that you should only be allowed to walk down Marsh Lane if you're dressed as as 16th century merchant.

That might be true, but not according to the council professional employed to make that judgement (according to the news report). Personally, I couldn't careless. WBC have the preservation instincts of ISIS it seems.

I could be wrong, but is it not the case that the land has not officially been handed over yet? And don't SLI still owe us a lot of houses?

Seems strange to be so amenable at the moment.

Or in this case like NTC.

The house itself is hardly in its original condition and the addition of lights to the pavement are likely to be rather less distracting to the historic building than the very modern shop front. I've just come back from Guildford, where the High Street houses a somewhat older crypt - to maintain the historic integrity to the vaulting etc, it's lit by floor lights. Exhasted suggested the lights could be coloured and activated by pedestrians. Actually an even better attraction to pull customers and which would be quite a novelty - not all new ideas are bad!
