I stumbled on the visit Newbury website today, and all I could think was "how much was the grant that paid for this?". I've since been told it cost £25,000, which if true is £24,500 too much!!! I could have built a better site on wordpress, I'm sure User would have done it for a fair price too!!

The point being that the website is rather poor for the price the taxpayer has paid. There appears to be a running theme here, taxpayers money being frittered away on vanity projects driven by an unelected group of people.

I can see why they would want a "Visit Newbury" website. But £25k? What planet do these people live on?

Best plan - get out your laptop, fire up wordpress & show us all how a proper 'Visit Newbury' website should look.

I'll even contribute to the £500.

I can't. Why would you need a "visit newbury" website paid for by the tax-payer?

If there's something worth visiting it'll have it's own web site, no?

Tell you what, you donate £50 to the NWN christmas parcel appeal and I will do the website. I'm a bit busy this week, but if admin can come on here and say somebody made an anonymous donation of £50, I will spend all weekend knocking up something special (and I'm not even a web designer). I believe that money has been wasted, and I'm sure the majority of local web designers would have killed for that contract, and it would have cost peanuts in comparison.

So you think someone has trousered £25k?

Is the claimed cost for the website just for the build, or does it include hosting, maintenance, enquiry response and updates (for a period)?

Is there a revenue stream that can be generated from the website? If so, how is this worked out between the contracting parties?

£25K would seem a lot for a simple (non-purchasing) site - but it may be more complicated than that.

Can you purchase accommodation through it?

Either it is or it isn't.

Still, come Monday & your design should sort things out.

http://www.visitnewbury.org.uk/

First impressions:

Cheap look, not very "prestigious"
No social media presence (twitter / facebook etc.)
No banner advertising (surely missed opportunity to make revenue?)
No hotel / car / ticket booking facility (missed commission oportunity?)
The only interaction appears to be request a brochure or contact via a simple email form. No cost generated there.

I was led to believe that everything featured on there pays for the privaledge (maybe explains why there isn't much on there?). There are no features that appear to cost any money, it would appear that it's just design, hosting and no doubt a hefty administration charge for updates etc.?

Can anyone find out how many people visit the site?
