QUOTE (Richard Garvie @ Jan 1 2011, 10:34 AM) Fuel duty was put up by the Government as of today. Petrol prices will go up another 3p a litre on 4th Jan when VAT goes up too. Heating oil will also be affected. Correct, apart from the '3p' depends upon the price. The rise is 2.5%, well publicised in advance. As always, I'm sure you have a point, I'm just not sure what it is!!!

QUOTE (Iommi @ Jan 1 2011, 01:02 PM) 2.5% of £1.25 = 3.12p. 2.5% of £1 = 2.5p 2.5% of £2 = 5p Like I said, as the 'price' varies the tax pennies change..... If the price drops to £1 the tax rate doesn't change!

QUOTE (Richard Garvie @ Jan 1 2011, 06:07 PM) My point being that people are pointing out how high prices are today. I just wanted to let these people know that it will go up again on Tuesday with VAT. Gee, thanks for pointing this out. Any other gems of wisdom you'd care to share with us thickies?

QUOTE (Richard Garvie @ Jan 1 2011, 06:53 PM) Not everybody was aware. I'm sure the more politically minded will know this, but a lot of people weren't aware that VAT would affect petrol prices or heating bills. Why do you need to be 'politically minded' to know that VAT applies to petrol? According to the media the shops have been very busy with people buying things to 'beat the VAT rise'. Seems to me most people know what VAT applies to & you are just posting ( as usual ) for political ends & dressing it up as public service posting.

QUOTE (Richard Garvie @ Jan 1 2011, 07:17 PM) Not at all Danny, did you see the piece on the news asking people what VAT is applied to and their reaction when told the full list? No. But, as you well know, the news is often biased to make a point. Interview 25 people & use the reactions of those that say what you want to say.

No VAT on Jaffa Cakes anyway, after a long fight to have them classified as cakes, not biscuits . It is a bit ridiculous, just what is, and is not, liable to VAT.

QUOTE (Richard Garvie @ Jan 1 2011, 07:37 PM) One thing I noticed in America Jeff is that each state has a sales tax which is put on pretty much everything (if not everything).
The thing is Danny, there is nothing out there that suggest everyone knows what is VAT applicable. Maybe we should both go out on the streets together to prove the point either way with our own survey? What would that prove? other than I'm better at conducting a survey than you. Most foods ( but not booze, crisps [ unless made from Corn - ie Doritos ], confectionary, ice cream, soft drinks & mineral water ) books, childrens clothes, safety equipment are all 0% rated. there are many others, either exempt or zero rated. oh, and BTW, Oil used for domestic heating is at 5%, and WON't be changing. One you won't know - The HMRC has decided contract postage with the Royal Mail or other carrier, which is being delivered to the EU can be subject to VAT.

I think it was a case of biscuits with chocolate on them being classed as confectionay & therefore are subject to VAT. Cake, with or without chocolate is zero rated. McVites had to prove that their Jaffa cakes were indeed cakes & therefore zero rated.
