No, just to my Mums house which all the surrounding roads are not salted, let alone cleared. I managed fine in my car.

I managed to walk 20 minutes to and from the town centre from my house and it was ****ing icey, and I'm fat and was eating ice cream, so I think most people can manage.

People's expectation on the council to be there for them is unreal.
Disabled and the elderly may suffer but in these cases then you'd hope they have a friend or relative they can call on for help in emergencys, eg needed more Werther's Originals.

Ideally yes there should be more help to manage but at the end of the day I feel this country, the people are just not accustomed to it. In Canada they have worse than this every day and they manage.

But the OP was not asking for the council to do the clearing, it was volunteers, on estates, who were doing it. The council supplied materials such as grit.

All of that can be done without the aid of GPS and doesn't confirm operation. Next you'll be claiming that all of Newbury's CCTV cameras work! tongue.gif

I'm just yanking your chain NWNREADER! wink.gif

I don't have a scoobie re the (current) CCTV performance. I know they all used to work - even the ones in Hungerford.

You made me flush (with embarrassment)

Yesterday morning I was rather disappointed with the apparent lack of gritting, but by yesterday evening, everything seemed to be OK.

Newtown Road is refered to be a primary salting and snow clearance. That's a laugh as neither has been done today.

It seems that the hills around the area which are the most difficult to get up and down in the snow/ice are the last to be salted. The Greenham Hill was almost impossible to get past the speed camera yesterday morning. It is shown as a priority strech on the WBC map but that depends on the interpretation of the word priority.

In some areas the gritters were told not do hills as if was unsafe, maybe this applied to Newbury. Am I right in assuming that grit only works when it is not snowing? If we have a few inches of snow on top of a gritted surface (it looks as if we could have that today) it is pointless?

grit or road salt?

The salt needs to go down on the road before the worst weather starts, but - best - while the road is not already wet. Otherwise the frost defeats the salt or it is so dilute it cannot work. It also needs to be driven on so the salt is crushed and mixed with the frost/snow as widely as possible. If not the immediate vicinity of the granule melts, is dilue and then does not spread....

The snow and the cleared bits really show up lane discipline, or rather lack of it. smile.gif

Not saying it's been too cold or too snowy, but this was the scene on the M4 this morning:

Something I saw this morning that perhaps needs discussion?
Man around the age of 60 in a flat-peaked hat and fishing/pervert coat (you know one of those really long green ones that that old matey wore in Hot Fuzz)
Was walking down a fairly major road, probably 2-3ft out from the curb. Cars were queueing up behind him.

Right, wrong?

What is really wrong is the failure of people to clear the paths in front of their houses. That '60 year old' was brought up in the same era as me. We had it drummed into us that it was an obligation to clear snow from your frontage, if you were old or disabled, the Scouts would help. We were also taught that the use of the Queens highway was a privilege not a right, even if you paid. So, the lesson we can learn from this is that we've failed to properly educate our children who are now a self centred, selfish breed who think they should be able to do what they like, without any concern at all for others.

..... right.

Considering most people who own the houses down this particular road are in their 30s, 40s and 50s? Selfish is probably a bit of an assumption. I think you're on a mad ting.
I suppose I must be self centered and selfish with no concern for others tongue.gif

I bet his actions meant that everyone driving was held up for at least 10 seconds.

I had to stop for about 3 minutes the other day because the lights were red.

... Right.

Again I was not making personal comment on the situation, was just explaining what had happened and what peoples views were.

Pavements round here are like ice rinks but the roads are fine. An elderly man possibly going to get food keeping safe by walking on the road? Fine by me. I object more that the selfish drivers queing behind him did not think to offer him a lift.

Most of the pavements I saw in the town centre this morning had been cleared but there were odd exceptions: e.g. the heavily used wide area of pavement in front of the post boxes next to the Post Office.

Incidentally, if you want maximise the chances of a nasty injury while walking on ice, keep your hands in your pockets. http://goo.gl/JXjOh
