I wonder why Mr. Benyon won't disclose his income tax returns?

It should be law that they do.

Why? It wouldn't prove anything even if he did. Income tax returns don't show illegal dealings or hidden dealings.

Are you inferring that Mr Benyon is involved in illegal or hidden dealings?

I don't think he is implying anything like that.

I haven't got a clue what he is doing, but if he was doing anything illegal then by showing ones tax returns wouldn't uncover any illegality.

Some people are just SO envious of people with money that it clouds their judgement. I imagine that Mr B probably pays more in tax than I earn. Would that make you feel better or worse or would it only go to prove what a nosey git you are. I wonder why YOU don't disclose yours. Might it be because it's none of anyone else's business?

Bang on.
The inference of the OP is that if you don't disclose something, you are automatically guilty.

Methinks rowlocks.

Also as your tax return is the amount you declare as income to HMRC so they can calculate what you owe them - if you have money/assets sequested in places to evade taxes it will by definition not show on a tax return. Plus if you pay yourself via a personal services company (i.e a sole person ltd company like IT contractors) then there are 2 tax returns, your personal one which would show earnings and dividends from the company and a second one for the ltd co showing what is has billed and what it has paid you and what it has kept as retained earnings.

This is the method Mr Livingstone used for his pay - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/l...nce-scheme.html

There will be people envious, but I doubt that is the reason. Suspecting someone of capitalising on others is likely to be more the issue. At the end of the day people of low financial standing are being made worse-off by people who are well-off. It seems reasonable to me to scrutinise decision makers.

Public Information

Quick lesson on inference and implication:

Imply and infer are opposites, like a throw and a catch. To imply is to hint at something, but to infer is to interpret. The speaker does the implying, and the listener does the inferring.

The implication is there, but as has already been said, a tax return provides limited information anyway.

If I was a public official that was making public policy on how much people will pay tax I would.

Presumably, if I was a public official concerned with making public policy on sexual health you'd want me to disclose who I'd been sleeping with?
