I would really like to meet somebody who was my 2nd Girlfriend in about 1971.
She was a BBC radio manager. Looked like Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders.
Sigh.ce
She ended up with Jardine Matheson as a journalist in Hong Kong.Old family ties.

Islington is flatulent with Guardian readers

QUOTE (Simon Kirby @ Dec 9 2015, 09:30 PM) *
Prompted by TM's post here, who would be your ultimate dinner guests - choose five, anyone you please.

My guests:
Seamus Heaney
Evelyn Glennie
Richard Feynman
Harold Wilson
Jeremy Bentham
Jeanne d'Arc

They all of them saw the world a little differently, found some deeper reality and greater depth, and then found a way of getting that across so the rest of us dolts could see what they saw, and I think they'd all have something interesting to say for themselves at dinner.

[Edit: And yes, it's Who's Coming to Dinner. D'oh!]

I have been involved with something called "The Kurdish Memory Project".
With the warfare in the area. It is stalled.
They still call the UK intervention after
WW1 and 2 a golden time.ce

We used RAF Hinaudi to bomb trouble makers in the era after the fall of the Ottoman empire.
I have been involved with Kurdish Memories project for a while.
They call the UK involvement a "Golden Age"

OK I am a lemming...20 years ago a vicar was knocked over and died on his way to a local church.
Road designers put in a Zebra crossing at that point. Quite handy as Carluccio's is on the other side.
But Sainsburies opened a local on the other side of my road.It would involve crossing 3 roads...there and back.
So along with most of my neighbours pottering off for the Times or Telegraph we "lem" it across the A1

I agree the ford is there and has been for a long time. The signs are obvious .
There are 5 local fords and I wouldn't trust them with high water in Norfolk.

Sadly another local lost his quite young life. A Judge . South Creake after an outing to the Ostrich pub nearby.
In the ford crossing.

We all make mistakes.

I was always quite quick with a witty reply to a comment at the bar.
Generally went down well.
The people were a bit older, and mostly they are all dead now.
Stuffed I am.

I accept you have to stand up. When the riots over London a few years ago.
Burnings, Lootings. it was the Kebab shop owners who came onto their doorsteps.
Brandishing very big knives for essential cookery they just stood against troublesome looters.
I am sure they used some strong language

Didn't work that well Andy Capp. Brutal warfare didn't really work well in WW2.

An uncle vanished after a bombing raid on Emden.

He was in the first 1000 bomber raid on Essen earlier the same week.
"We shall wreak the whirlwind" it was 1942

His name is on stone at Runnymede.

XJ776 got banned for much the same evolution point as this.
It did involve a fatality. Norfolk is not as flat as it is made out to be.

There is a lot of run off from fields. Which floods some local roads.

My cottage is 2" higher than the other side ,a friend has had troubles for years on the other side of the road & the water goes straight through his house.
So he gets new carpets every so often.Anyway he has moved into Cathedral close in Norwich.

It is not all flood plain troubles. In the photos posted at the top there is space to stop and take a look.
If you see a shark take another way home.

The British interests in Iran were to be nationalised in 1950 or so. OK said the bosses. we'll blow everything up...
Right said the legitimate government we 'll detain UK citizens (including moi) in camps.

UK backed down and we were all evacuated on a battle cruiser.

Who on earth would have called their son.

It was to do with communist influence in the area as well. "The great Game" 'Twixt Russia and UK empire.

..and get Nothing Much to moderate...

That was a surprise Spartacus. I don't post much until the thread has died and then I waffle a bit rolleyes.gif I settled in central London in 1972.Toured with theatre companies all over the UK and even Scotland.

I have done a few visits for Simon's Newts. I have my own strange politics here.In Islington
Emily "white van" Thornbury is my MP. Corbyn is up the other end (so to speak).
I only post when it is simple.

Well apart from instant banking and so forth I would really miss the keyboard.

I guess you are right Andy Capp. When a previous PC bit the dust I used library computers.
Thankfully 1 was within walking distance. I don't post a lot and don't really do face book either.

However it is often pleasantly surprising what pops up.

H.G.Wells' short story "In the country of the blind etc"

Sadly Nunez the sighted one was due to have his eyes put out towards the end. To make him equal.
Never became king and ran away from his non existant kingdom and girlfriend...
over the mountains and far away.

I think it is a fairly gentle local forum.I don't live there but I remember bits.
I don't involve with the local politics. I don't swear or cuss. I enjoy reading the comments.
That is about it.

Actually the last time I really swore was when I accidentally cut a vein on Christmas Day 2009
using some new sharp knives to cut the Christmas Cake. There is one between your thumb and 1st finger.
"Dad you never swear" said daughter until she saw the pool of blood.
I organised a tourniquet and had six stitches without anaesthetic . Still here though!

The forum seems to self moderate. Most seem to be polite.

Some years ago I posted a whole load of cine on You tube. You get comments back sometimes.
Dating from Kurdistan in the late '50s....
Someone posted that her dad took over my dad's job in 1955 when we ended up in Papua New Guinea.
She was Assyrian---I rather stupidly posted that I thought they were wiped out centuries ago.
And everything was in the British Museum.

Foolish me. They all live in California and Australia now.

It is a complicated world...helping others, we do try.
I donated a fair sum from my RUG pension fund to help intellectuals escape from Iran.
They were all women. The men were killed. Poets, writers, playwrights. musicians.
They want me to be more involved but I was only 2 years old..

I think it is a shame and will probably lose a fairly gentle forum.
They just delete it if it gets stroppy.

You are quite right GMR..Back in 2000 I transferred and edited old cine from 1953 ish.
Posted them on you tube .Surprising results years later.
The UK were operating oilfields in about 1955.It was a golden age for many.

A film company from Barnes(London) remastered all my original cine.
GMR look up Gwynne Roberts on wiki.

Not sure if anything will work anymore...www.kurdmemory..com

I write emails and other posts in my head at bedtime and thankfully fall asleep.
A bit like counting sheep.
They are forgotten by morning which is a relief for all parties I am sure.
Internet is troublesome, but when they open up the box for cable nearby I panic...pretty stupid really.

It has invaded your life.
